Yes its great idea. The picture quality is decent enough to play the dvds and yes the PS2 does play the PS1 games. Great deals on the PS2 now where you can get it for 129 with a 2nd controller and/or memory card. The PS2 games are dropping in price as well with the xbox being out there.

PS2's are cheap and compact nowadays. I'd get one to play movies, old PS1 games, and some of the many awesome PS2 games. I think getting a PS2 is a good idea. I wish I would have bought one rather than the crappy Xbox 360. Ps2 is awesome!

If money is tight you can use a PS2 to play DVDs. It's a pretty lousy DVD player though, in terms of the video quality. Still, it can't be much worse than some $50 player from Walmart.

I used my PS2 for this exact purpose. It works just fine as a DVD player plus the advantage of all the gameplay. However, the only thing you might miss is having a remote...Also, the menu options are a bit more difficult..

heck yes, do it. there are some pretty sweet ps2 games out there too. which are wicked cheap. might i even suggest looking for a used one on ebay
