teenage suicide and depression are on the rise in this country and is being taken seriously by many. I suggest you talk to a school counsellor. Or simply call your local crisis line, they can get you in touch with the help you need.

Your mom is right, we do all feel depressed from time to time, but sometimes, normal depression turns into clinical depression, and we need a little help to get through it. I think you should tell your mom that you want to visit your family doctor. Talk to him or her about how you are feeling, and perhaps the doctor can recommend a medication to help you or can put you in touch with some therapist (specifically, mental health specialist).
Because of your age, you are ripe for depression. I had a TERRIBLE depression when I was 13/14, and I think it related to new hormones in my body, etc.
You are a perfectly normal kid. Depression is a part of life, and it affects some more than others. I have had my fair share. Just know that there are other people out there who either feel or have felt EXACTLY like you do right now--so you are not alone. And, also, your depression is most likely temporary.
If you feel close enough to your mom, tell her about the suicide attempts, and tell her that you want to see medical help for your depression. It was the best choice I ever made as a teenager--to go and see a doctor about how I was feeling.

Before I explain how depression can be cured, I would like to point to the fact that suicide is useless. It certainly takes away your mental pain, but you don't know how your life will be in the near future.
Depression can be stopped within hours with the appropriate medication.
Your mother is indeed not correct if she claims that everyone is once depressed. However, we proceed.
First you must get a diagnosis by a psychiatrist. You must find out what kind of disorder you have:
- bipolar disorder (violent mood swings; high ups and downs)
- depressive disorder
DEPRESSIVE DISORDER
Depressive disorder is recognized by these symptoms:
Depression:
- Low energy
- feeling of worthlessness
- low self-esteem
- heavy emotional burden
- crying spells
- thoughts of suicide
Depressive disorder is recognized by long persistent sadness.
Cures:
- Antidepressant medications
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
- Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)
- Therapy (could be simple visit to a psychologist)
I am not that fond of therapy. The best solution is therapy combined with antidepressants.
BIPOLAR DISORDER
Bipolar disorder is defined by its violent mood swings. On the one hand there is mania, an euphoric feeling; on the other hand there is depression.
Characteristics of mania:
- euphoric feeling
- grandiose feeling (feeling you can do anything you want such as p.e. become a billionaire)
- rapid incoherent thoughts moving from one subject to another
- high self-esteem
Depression:
(see above)
Mixed state (this is a merge between depression and mania):
- low self-esteem
- rapid incoherent thoughts
- agression
Most bipolar people have multiple mood swings a year, such as a few months depression and a few months mania. Sometimes they even have multiple cycles (from mania to depression) a day. If you do not have these violent mood swings, you may be sufering from Depressive Disorder.
Cures for Bipolar Disorder:
- mood stabilizers
- therapy
What I would do in your case:
- Seek out whether you have Depressive Disorder or Bipolar Disorder. This is very important.
- Convince your mother you have this. Show my answer or show a website about the disorder you have.
- Discuss all YOUR (experienced) symptoms very detailed with a psychiatrist
- The psychiatrist will prescribe a drug and/or therapy
I have been depressive for years with violent mood swings in between. I was bipolar and now I am doing much better. I was prescribed a mood stabilizer. So you see, mental illnesses can be treated.
If you have any questions mail me at: vanderputte.steven@telenet.be
(it can take a while before I respond; so don't worry)
Let me know if it worked. Else we can try to find another solution.

most times people (adults) tend not to believe their child has depression until they find out they have tried committing suicide. I think you should do some research on the computer further on depression and read the signs of depression. Be honest with your mom and tell her what you tried to do, let her read the info on depression you researched and maybe that will get it through her head. If she still doesn't believe you then you need to take you own actions, talk to a school counselor, make a call on you own to your local mental health center and find out what you can do to help yourself. And don't worry, they will not lock you up and throw away the key. I know, I've been there too. Good luck

I believe you. But listen, commiting suicide, it wont solve your problem. You definately need to make sure your talking to someone about the the problems your going through, and how you feel. Keeping it pent up inside is will only make you feel worse. Your only 14 years old.. 14. You probably have another 70-80 years of your life left to find happiness. Its everywhere. Only if you believe its there. If you cant believe you can find happiness, you need to talk to someone quick. Be it a psychologist, or a real good friend, a trusted family member.. someone. There is always someone who will love you, there is always a chance to be successful, there is a chance for you to have everything you want. But you gotta want it. If you remember one thing out of this message, remember this. "God only helps those who help themselves." If you believe that, you will be okay.

I tried to commit suicide when I was 16, trust me, it's not worth it. I failed, and I'm glad I did. There's so much more to live for. Even though right now I don't feel that way, and I am depressed myself, but I know because of what I've been through. And I know it's hard, and you feel like nobody understands, and unless they've ever been in that situation, then they won't.

Don't give up! Your mom obviously doesn't understand you even though she may be depressed as well and not even realize it. I suggest you talk to your MD and get a referral to therapist. You need to find out the root of the problem and work on resolving your issues. I know it's really hard when people don't understand you, but you're aware of your problem and have the opportunity to do something about it.

Go to your school counselor and explain it to him or her! How did they not know you tried committing suicide?! What is making you so depressed at such a young age?!! Life is great and simple.. trust me you have no idea what I have been through and yes depression sucks but you will have to want to get better before anything or anyone can help you!

Stephanie - go you your doctor - without your mom and explain how you are feeling.
Failing that have a search on the net for depression support groups in your area or telephone lines you can all. I don't know whether you are in the UK but if you are you could call childline.
