Why do we need a purpose? Are you that miserable just being yourself?

I think your question presupposes the answer. You question assumes that there must be a purpose. It assumes that we would want to know such a purpose if there was one. Your question is deep and it is important. My question is: Why are you asking it?

If the atheists and sceptics are correct and life ends at the grave. That there is no God and no immortality, no higher purpose for life other than reproduction or the few snatched pleasures that we can enjoy during our short, but ultimately meaningless and inconsequential lives. Then your question is both answered - In the form of, "Sorry there is actually no purpose."

On the other hand, you ARE asking the question. I would say that this is your first hint that the atheist and sceptics are mistaken. We long for purpose in life. All of us do. Even those of us who are really sure that there is no God, we act as if there is. We speak to each other and treat each other as if we matter a lot more than merely to carry and replicate genetic code. The universal testimony of human experience says that there MUST be, there simply has to be some kind of meaningful purpose to all this.

So, you see it all depends on whether you believe in God or not. If you don't then there is no real, meaningful purpose in the sense that I think you are asking the question.

On the other hand your question IS meaningful to all of us. And if God does exist, there can be some higher purpose beyond brief human experiences, or beyond the replication of genetic code. The question then RIGHTLY DEVELOPED should become two questions:

1. If God isn't there, what is the purpose and can we actually live consistently with that fact in mind?

2. If God is there, then what does he say, if he speaks, or acts, what does he say that our purpose actually is?

Every Blessing,

Tom

There is no purpose, if you mean some grand scheme or direction to life. We can each infuse our own existence with a personal sense of purpose. I have, baring accident or illness, 70 or 80 years of consciousness in an amazing (and expanding) universe, and I am fortunate enough to have been born into an age and a culture that is developing the tools to explore and understand that universe.I have the capacity to be awed, I have curiosity. I can interact with, love and cherish my fellow creatures.
That has to be enough for me, because there is no more. I wish there were - I am one of those guys who would like to live forever, actually! But there are only two choices available to us - like it or lump it!

The problem is that the universe is impossible, it is completly ilogical, we may just be imagining it, we could be all part of one mind, nobody can prove anything... the list goes on, providing that it actually exists at all or indeed i exist.

All we can do is accept the reality of what we are presented. for example water is one of the most common things on the surface of this planet yet even though we consider it normal it is one of the most chemicaly odd things there are.

So its natural for humans to assume things as reality, you don't check every morning if things still fall down. If you can break away from these assumptions and your mind is open to all possiblities. From this point of accepting that perception of reality depends on the observers standpoint you can start to make obsevations of the true nature of the universe.

So in short, the only way to understand everything is to forget everything and accpet all possiblities, you accept nothing as reality and therefore understand everything... ...about nothing.

To know nothing about everything is to know everything about nothing, as the universe is both everything and nothing you will then know everything.

Oh by the way god didn't make me, im just imaginary.
