I was using "SCOTCH" paper tape in 1959, but it was quickly replaced by acetate about 1960 then came"Mylar" which was thinner and therefore longer, I was able to record 3 hours on one 7" reel, I had to have a tape recorder on board ship as it was not possible to play a turntable. I uses to record off the BBC when on leave, and in fact I lent the BBC my tapes of their music about 7 years ago, Does tape last? I recently transferred some reel-to-reel on to minidisc, sound great. And YES the casette followed RTR

don't forget that the wire recorder came before the reel-to-reel tape. Did not last long before tape came along because wire got twisted too easily, or something.
