And for that matter, what do you think will be thenext huge life changing invention wil be and when will we invent it? When will we get the idea to invent it? How long will it take to invent it? The persons who told you that they have already been invented is basically correct. Airplanes have been around almost as long as automobiles.
If you mean, a car that can convert to an airplane, that too, has already been invented as far back as the 1940's. There have been several models. Try a search for "Aerocar." It was one of the better known models.
Meanwhile, the problem with the kind that you envision is that to fly one of those already invented, or even something newere, is that one would need to be a licensed pilot to fly one. You wouldn't want just anyone up there, fooling around in a ton or two of hurtling metal?
And, if everyone could get one, think of the congestion in the air. More and more aircraft are flying now, than ever before and crashes and near misses occur much more often. You have probably seen how even licensed drivers behave in their cars. Why would they behave any better in the sky?
So, I don't believe what you are asking about will ever happen.
Sorry, but it's a good thing.

They've already been invented, they're just expensive, and not very practical. If everyone had one, managing air traffic would be quite problematic.
But, in essence, the technology is already here. I saw one on Discovery a couple months ago.

Look at our roads today…look at the drunk drivers and fenderbenders. Now, raise all of that 10, 20, 50, 100 feet off of the ground. Fenderbenders become death. Drunk drivers become the terrors of the roads…even beyond their capacity now.
I would say, in answer to your query, NEVER. It won’t be for the lack of technology, but because mankind is too stupid to handle it.

No flying cars until we get a better fuel source. Life changing invention would be a better fuel source.

they can do it now, they have the tech to do it...but it would cost you 10,000,000.00 in order to buy one.
