I'm completely confused. Is there a difference? A noticiable one? Why two different names?

Putt Putt is a "brand" of miniature golf. It is a national chain. So it is sort of like calling all tissues "Kleenex".

There is a difference. A BIG difference. Putt-putt is the brand name of a specific version of miniature golf. At Putt-putts, all courses are the same all across the country. Each hole is a hole of skill. There are no cutesy props on the course. No windmills, castles, etc.... It is totally a game of skill where you can play holes complicated only by it's hills and valleys.

Miniature Golf on the other hand are all the courses that dot the landscape of America that has no uniformity. Most holes use props on the course that places less emphasis on skill and more on fun.

No, they're the same thing. Putt Putt is just a business name for the chain of miniature golf courses.

First, Putt Putt is a company name, but it is more commonly referred to as a style. Putt Putt is more scientific, geometry based golf (corners, slopes, angles). There are no windmills, caves, water falls, etc. Minauture golf has the windmills, waterfalls, etc and isn't as hard. There are actually professional Putt Putt players out there that tour a circuit and get paid for it. What a sweet gig, huh?

Miniature golf sounds more mature for adults. Only kids say Putt Putt. Sounds silly for an adult to say Putt Putt.

They are the same. However, there is a chain of miniature golf courses called Putt-Putt.

A brand name, both are the same. Neither are truly golf and PUTT PUTT is the more accurate descriptive term.
