India was a member of the British Empire for over 200 years. Many Indians developed English during that time as their first language and other as a second language.

Natives of India can answer better than can I, but the short one is historical. India was once occupied , and became a British colony,
English was established as the common language in a country where there were many languages spoken.
This explains, BTW why most Indians speak with a British accent.

A lot of people in foreign countries know English well. English is taught in a lot of schools. India also used to be under British rule so that might have something to do with is as well.

In India we speak so many language... to interact with each other either we have to use Hindi or English. This is one of the reason. Also we are tought English as one of the language upto +2.

At one point, India was ruled by Great Britain. Now they speak English and whatever Indian Dialect that is a part of their area of India, such as Hindi

India was a british colony did you know that sansscrit the language of the Hindu relgion is best translated in german. English German and other european languages are Indo-european. We have common roots.

You will be surprised how many people from all over the world speak perfect English, even third world countries living in the middle of nowhere.

They realize that to be apart of the world, one needs to know English. Most are taught all thru school. Tho, you will find them also studying Russian, Chinese, etc.,.
