The Bible does make it clear that spiritual baptism is required ("you must be born again" means the same thing), but nowhere does it specify that physical baptism is. Verses such as, "repent and be baptised, and you will be saved" refer to spiritual baptism.

Baptism is not a requirement for salvation, it is meant as an outward expression of an inward faith. The thief on the cross died without being baptized, yet Christ told him he would be in Paradise with Christ that day.

There is no mandate in the bible that says you have to be baptised. Baptism is a symbolic ritual.

I've never see "optional" used in the Bible.
But I don't recall a commandment, or a rule, or a demand, that one be baptized. There is, however, an admonition for us to follow His example, and He was baptized by John. Therefore, it is seen by the Christian Church to be a sacrament.
