Office, which includes Word and the spell checker is a seperate package of software from XP.

Open Office is available for free from openoffice.org

It will create, open, and edit Word docs, or any other Microsoft file type.

HAve fun -

Microsoft XP is a standalone Software. It is the Operating System necessary to make your Laptop computer Work.

Normally you may have Windows XP installed and then the Laptop Vendor at his own prerogative or at your request may install Microsoft Office ( Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access FrontPage etc. belong in here.) on your Laptop.

It is not necessary that just because you bought a brand new Laptop it has to come installed with Microsoft Office as well. Surely some kind of Office should have been installed. You should ask your Laptop Vendor as to what happened.

It is possible that the vendor did not install Office Program because he would have to buy it separately as office Suite too, is a stand-alone Program.

It is also a possibility that there is some version of Office installed on your Laptop and that the Vendor just did not create an Icon for it on the desktop. Do a ' search ' within your laptop and see if it has Corel WordPerfect or some such version of Word ( and other such programs ) are installed.

SP2 means Service Pack 2. The service packs include some patches or upgrades to the original version of Windows (any versions). SP2 is the latest version so far. It helps in fixing some security flaws in the original version of the operating system and/or add additional facility or just make the operating system works faster (slightly). More information : A service pack (in short SP) is a collection of updates, fixes and/or enhancements to a software program delivered in the form of a single installable package. Many companies, such as Microsoft or Autodesk, typically release a service pack when the number of individual patches to a given program reaches a certain (arbitrary) limit. Installing a service pack is easier and less error-prone than installing a high number of patches individually, even more so when updating multiple computers over a network. Service packs are usually numbered, and thus shortly referred to as SP1, SP2 etc.It is notable however that they may bring, besides bug fixes, entirely new features, as is the case for instance with the SP2 of Windows XP. Hope this helps

Assuming your laptop came with some pre-installed software, check for Microsoft Works Suite or WordPerfect first. Not all vendors install Microsoft Word.

If you really don't have anything, then try downloading OpenOffice like others have suggested. Very good program and it is free! I would only download it if you have a broadband internet connection because it is a very large file. If you don't have broadband, go to the website below and order it on CD-ROM.

Word is something you need to buy separately if you particularly want it although there is an alternative office suite written and provided by Sun Microsystems that supports Word documents. There's equivalents of all the Microsoft Office programs in there for free. You can download it here -

Wordpad is nothing more than a typewriter. No features, usually used for writing code.

Get Microsoft Word. They have special student pricing, look online, check office depot, or your college's store.
