They say that Jail time is the penalty but....
My step mom has an issue making my little sister go to school. She lets her stay home whenever she wants. My sis is 10 and in 5th grade. 3 months into the school year my stepmom gets a warning letter stating that if my sis misses one more day of school (with out a doctors note) than my stepmom will be fined (I think she said it was in excess of $1000) and after that she could face time in jail and my sis will be held back in 5th grade next year. They live in Oklahoma.
Parents will usually be the ones facing the brunt of the penalties, fines and jail time. It is a parents responsibility to make sure that their child attends school.. even if the child is older and ditching school. The older the child the more penalties they incure such as being held back and juvenile detention.
I dont think jail time is given unless the truancy is severe (like the child never attending school as in your case). Not having a way to school is not an excuse. Your parents should contact the school you should be attending and they should be able to offer an alternative way for you to get to school (or your parents need to adjust their schedules so that you can get to and from school)

Missing out on any aspect of your education can have negative reflections on you for the rest of your life. Such as your earning potential, or even where you live at , and that type of people you are surrounded by. I don't know why you can't get to school, but discuss this problem with your parents. If that is not a solution, contact the school itself for more information. Believe me, Honor Students are an endangered and protected species in today's society, someone will help you. Congratulations on giving what it takes to become an Honor Student.Your family is very proud of you, I'm sure.

I think the child will get into most of the trouble. Besides, how many parents know that their children are ditching school

In my day, such behaviour attracted a sound thrashing followed by straight to bed with no supper. I think the penalties are much more severe these days.
