well it may be but not everytime.
suicide is first of all not a mental illness. get this clear. then, someone who has bipolar disorder may get suicidal, because their moods vary from downright low to extreme high. schizophrenics may also resolve to suicide but with appropriate treatment it can be avoided.
so let's get back to suicide. many people think that being suicidal means that you are mental, that you have a mental problems. i would rather say that a suicidal person has a problems with his feelings. Each individual has his amount of coping resources and the amount of pain he can sustain. i mean emotional pain. and these two factors i just mentioned are not the same for every person. coping resources is the ways you employ to cope with pain, essentially emotional pain. like when someone dear to a person dies grieving is a way of coping with the pain. after a while the person gets better and learns to carry on with life. however some persons cannot and need help. one gets suicidal when the emotional pain he is bearing exceeds his coping capacity. when several emotional pains pile up, a simple thing like being given a light scolding by a parent or simply having someone telling you that you are ugly may trigger the act of deciding to end up one's life. in normal conditions, if ever someone tells you that you are ugly will you go and kill yourself? NO. but when you have several problems piling up on your mind causing you distress, your coping resources reaches breaking point and when it breaks, one wants to commit suicide.
so suicide is not a mental problem. it may be the consequence or result of another mental disease like i mentionned above but in itself it is not a mental disease.
anyway for more information go to this site. it is very helpful

The mental state of people who die by suicide is pretty broad. While most are suffering from depression or bipolar disorder, some are schizophrenics. See suicide in Wikipedia.

Mental illness is the main reason people commit suicide. A person has to be pretty mentally unstable to take their own life... I mean, everyone has problems. People who are mentally O.K. deal with their problems. People who are mentally ill cannot deal with their problems. Hope this helps...
