Corinthians 12

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

We all have spiritual gifts from the Lord. God has placed in us, as he chooses a spiritual gift. Some of us have the gift of healing, others the gift of discernment, and so on. This does not mean however that we can't have any other gifts, because all gifts of the spirit are available to all of us if we reach out for them.
But of course in Gods timing. The main thing to think about is what is your gift or gifts, and how can you begin to use them for the good of the Lord. We all need to put our gifts to use!

Hi

it's not all that complicated really. The holy Spirit, i.e. the Spirit of God, is immensely powerful. Try to regard it as an emotive spirit, rather than a "ghost". What the passage is saying is that the Spirit will ofetn impart "talents" or "gifts" to believers. The passage ends to say that regardless of how many of these blessings are bestowed upon different recipients, they all come from the very same source, that is the Spirit of Christ. Are you baffled by a particular phrase in the passage?

Also remember, these gifts cannot be taken lightly. They are an immense responsibility. Mostly, it requires tremendous meditation, prayer and faith for one to receive such a manifestation. What a feeling though! God is ALIVE! You are welcome to e-mail me if you need to know more. I will help if I can.

These are the gifts of the Spirit, which you can experience today in any pentecostal church. Many believers find that as they grow as Christians, they develop one or more of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. In our church, a message is regularly given in tongues, and an interpretation by someone else. Sometimes prophecies, and words of knowledge are given regarding people's lives. Some churches don't believe that the gifts of the Spirit are for today, others do.

This is how The Holy Spirit equips Christians to serve God. They are the true abilities that psychic manifestations are counterfeits of.

Word of Knowledge allows a person to be aware of facts of a person's life. It is counterfeited by telepathy, psychometric and clairvoyance

Word of Wisdom allows a person to see patterns in a situation and to discern God's will

The Gift of Faith is an utter conviction that God will do something in a situation. It is total trust beyond all reason.

There are many gifts of Healing, as there are also many counterfeits. Healers may work in specific areas.

Miracles is the ability to exert authority over a situation, to command something into existence or to command something to happen.

Prophecy is becoming God's mouthpiece, speaking His words into a situation. It may involve "wisdom pictures," which is a visual prophecy requiring interpretation. The counterfeit of this is mediumship and channelling.

Tongues is the supernatural ability to speak another language that the speaker has no natural knowledge of.

Interpretation is the ability to understand another language that the hearer has no knowledge of.

It's a fairly straightforward chapter, Paul is telling in verse 7 why we are given these gifts, verses 8, 9 and 10 tell what some of those gifts are and verse 11 describes how each of our gifts are part of the Spirit.

These are gifts from the Holy Spirit that are available to believers. Not all gifts are available to every believer, for the body of Christ is made up of many members. There is an old saying in Christianity that you get the Jesus you preach. God awards you gifts according to what you believe and practice because he does not want any believer to waste any gift that he/she is given. these gifts are awarded not to glorify the person receiving them, but to edify the church and give glory to God. We are humble servants and must never expect to be glorified in our earthly service. We will be glorified in the heavenly realm with Christ----Read Romans chapter 8. Read also Galatians chapter 5.

To provide a Vedic perspective, the Bhagavad Gita Chapter 15 Verse 15 states the following :-

I am seated in everyone's heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.

Purport by HDG A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada :-

The Supreme Lord is situated as Paramātmā in everyone's heart, and it is from Him that all activities are initiated. The living entity forgets everything of his past life, but he has to act according to the direction of the Supreme Lord, who is witness to all his work. Therefore he begins his work according to his past deeds. Required knowledge is supplied to him, and remembrance is given to him, and he forgets, also, about his past life. Thus, the Lord is not only all-pervading; He is also localized in every individual heart. He awards the different fruitive results. (end quote)

The Paramatma or "supersoul" is an all pervading expansion of the Supreme, the Supreme is omniscient and perfectly provides different levels of awareness and abilities to perform activities to each living entity, these are based upon merit and the quality of previous activities performed, those who are granted the freedom of these various allowances are obliged to use them for the common good, otherwise they will be withdrawn, the continual and progressive interaction and exchange between the individual living entity, the Supreme and all other living entities, through the manifestation of these qualities and the performance of Spiritual activities, lead to full consciousness of the individual self and of God.

Without coming off as too religious, this chapter sounds like different people have different abilities to me and that they interpret the same thing differently.

If you don't mind my interpretation to be a little general that is.
