He wants his mama. Quit feeding the bad behavior. Ignore him when he meows. Reward when he is silent.

You don't understand. He wants FRESH food, not food that has been sitting in the dish. Even dry food that has been sitting in the dish is no longer considered fresh after a nanosecond. It's gotta be FRESH! You are his servant. How dare you sleep when he wants fresh food?
Needless to say I have 3 of the furry taskmasters at my house. The middle one wants to go outside between 3:30 and 4:30 each morning so if she is in the house I know she is going to wake me up. In nice weather I just put her out when I go to bed.
Otherwise I just get up and put her out. Then the other 2 want.......that's right, fresh food!

At the shelter where I volunteered there were cats we called "affection eaters". They would only eat when a human was present.
You are of course reinforcing the annoying behavior by giving in to it. So it's either "tough love" for quite a while or going without a full night's sleep. Either way you won't get a lot of rest for a while.

Sounds like you're helping him start a bad habit(waking you up at night). Just ignore him when he meows at you at night. Be sure to keep him active and interact with him during the day. This should help.

Our cat gets pushy with the meows sometimes, too. If you want it to stop, ignore it. There's obviously nothing wrong with him, he just wants your attention.....and now he's learned that if he meows enough, he'll get it. Sometimes cats are a little TOO much like children;)

i have never had this, maybe he just wants some attention. if he has any ginger in him or possibly long fur he will be ( in his opinion) the most important cat in the world.give him more attention in the day maybe and then he might not meow in the night...hope everything goes OK! bye!

Try putting the food in your room maybe he just wants your company while he eats. Cats are funny that way.

Maybe he just wants you to spend more time with him. Try spending at least 10-15 minutes more time a day just playing with him and showing him affection. Cats get lonely too and they feel better after we've focused all of our attention on them for awhile.

He wants attention and attention is the best reward an animal can have, ignore him when he does this, and reward him for eating by himself. In his own psychilogy, he will assosiate eating by himself with something good happening, so he will want to eat by himself more often.
