I believe that there are many Protestants and Catholics who just think they are Christians but don't follow in Christ's foosteps. That's what has been causing so many deviations and denominations. Opinions versus Principles.
What did Jesus say about the Father's will?
The first and foremost commandments - He says - are:
to love God, above everything else, and to love our neighbour (our fellow human beings!) even if they were our enemies!!. Any applications or interpretations deviating from these two are NOT VALID.
Compassion AND forgiveness are taught and recommended in many religions and by some our past philosophers. But it seams to hard to apply in our daily lives ( not "realistic" or not "practical" or "unscietific"). That’s why so much misinterpretation and "justification" is rampant.
This teaching is not restricted to "Christians" by the way. Many "religions" teach as Jesus did that compassion AND forgiveness toward ALL others is the straight and narrow path for us to follow. But He said that few will follow it.
Could you immagine, if all Jews, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sihks, Hindus and others, who all have been given the teachings of compassion and forgiveness, would live up to that? There would be peace on earth!!
As someone else put it: Love IS the answer - whatever the question! - for Jews, Muslims, Christians (Catholic AND Protestant!), Buddhists, Sihks, Hindus and others.
Try it! And judge by the results, especially you "scientists" who always want proof.

I think only some relatively uninformed Protestants think that Catholics are not Christians. I won't say brainwashed or stupid or crazy because who am I to decide the validity of your communication with the Divine?

I believe a lot of protestants are brainwashed into thinking that Catholics are not Christian.
If only they'd do a little research and realize that the Catholic church was freaking founded by Jesus. I think that would make us Christian. ;)

The question is hard to answer because you are lumping a lot of different people into two vague categories. About all an individual can answer is what the individual thinks. And of course the bigger question is, does it matter. My advise is: if you say you're a Christian than act like a Christian and it won't matter what other people think. Ultimately, God's the only one who will judge you, so all you should care about is what God thinks about you.

I'm not Protestant, but I'm having a hard time figuring out why you think they are so interested in Catholics or why you care so much what they think about you.

I'm a Catholic and I have definitely run into Protestants who say we are not Christians and are idol worshipers and all kinds of bizarre stuff. For instance, if you have ever read any of the Chick tracts...go to their website and see the vicious stuff they say.

None of the above.
You are starting your question on a faulty premise and putting words in the mouths of Protestants. That is neither fair, nor right, nor called for.

I do think it comes down to one word when you speak of protestants and Catholics, and that is hypocrisy that pretty well sums it up.
