If it wasn't for the regulation people could put or do whatever to the food that we eat. With the regulations we are mostly assured of getting uninfected food. As you can see by the spinach fiasco, it isn't 100 percent foolproof.

This started during the 1920's when the government checked food handled by businesses.
It was originally triggered by the book called, "The Jungle" (which was ironically purely fictional) telling about how meat was on the floor and how the butchers would spit in it and step on it.
It turned out the real stuff was worse.
Without food regulations, we would all have germs and unhealthy biproducts and what not with our food.
Just be happy you don't have cockroaches with your bottled water.

So people won't make other people sick as a dog. Case in point: "Typhoid Mary" -- try goggling her (add the quotation marks, too, for better results.)
