Depends on how much you know about the relative eg
1. Do you know where / when s/he was born?
2. Can any other relatives you know provide any clues?
3. It helps if the surname is unusual - very difficult to find Smith
or Jones!
4. You could consider hiring a private detective but this would probably only be sensible if you already have some definite information as to which town the relative may be living
You also have to be prepared for the fact that the relative may not want to be contacted
