Does PetSmart grooming service use sedatives, tranquilizers, or any other type of drug on animals before grooming them?

Please provide evidence or source.

Petsmart does not use sedatives or tranqs of any kind. For particularly difficult dogs (ie: dogs that may bite), they do use muzzles. Muzzles are perfectly safe and do not harm the dog---and they prevent the dog from fear-biting the strangers handling him or her.

If a dog is too unruly to be groomed, they call the owner and inform them that they are not able to groom the dog and to contact their vet. A vet CAN and WILL use sedatives or tranqs per the owners' request, or if they deem it absolutely necessary. Most vets get permission before administering any such drugs. Petsmart, however, will NEVER do so---it would be a huge liability for them to administer drugs to any animal they didn't own or were permitted to treat.

No, they do not use sedatives or any other type of drug on the animals. They will muzzle the ones who are nipping or biting. My sister works as a bather at PetsMart and says sometimes some of the groomers will allow the dog to fall off the table (while attached to the rope that supposed to keep them in place) in hopes that they will calm down. This depends on the groomer itself though, because there are some who are gentle and do a great job...without being mean to the animal.

I would have to say no, they don't. To my knowledge, in order to use these sorts of things on an animal, it has to be a vet because it would vary with type of animal, weight, age, health, etc. I know that to misdose an animal will make it extremely ill if not kill them. Antibiotics for animals are tricky enough, never mind sedating them.

No. I have my puppy groomed there once a month. It takes about 45 minutes. They wash her and clip her nails for $9.99 (puppy package).
