On the surface, this sounds like a wiseass question. However there have been instances where people have eaten their precious dogs for their own survival. An example would be sled dogs whose job it is to pull the sleds across the frozen tundra. There are many documented cases where the musher and his sled team got stranded. The weaker dogs were put down to feed and ensure the survival of the whole team. The musher raised and loved his dogs, but he knew before the journey began that this could be a possibility.
I hope I'm never hungry enough to be forced into such a decision, but the survival instinct often guides our hands.

We have three little pooches....... and I always joke that Bunni, the robust little Bichon Frise, would be the first one to eat if it ever came down to it.
First I'd marinate her in some Herbs de provance, befitting her pedigree of course, then dredge in flour and saute in a light olive oil and finish with some gray French sea salts. Serve with a rice pilaf and maybe buttered steamed asparagus.
I'm thinking a robust Bordeaux and some crusty baguettes to round off the table.
What do you think?

No!
If I was in that bad of shape, I would have to start thinking about making some serious life changes instead of just eating the dog (and that would be too messy anyway.)
The dog who I also can't afford to feed would be given a loving home of someone who could, and if I could not afford to feed my children, and they cried day and night because of hunger pains, I would no longer be a fit mother and I could not longer keep them.
It's ok to starve myself, but my children? that is far from acceptable!

No. If you eat the dog, you have only one meal. If you teach the dog to hunt for rats in the housing project, you'll have a good meal every day. Same reason that herders in Africa don't kill their cattle and goats - they can get more nutrition from their milk and blood than from their meat.

I have a good friend who grew up in Austria during WW II. He often talks about having had "roof rabbit" for dinner as a child. I'll let you interpret that for your self
