People have already answered this. when you shave, you're cutting the hair at the base where it is the thickest, so it will appear to be thicker as it grows back in. I've also heard that shaving can stimulate the follicle, so you might have a short growth spurt.
But think about it - if it were true, it would be the cure for baldness. All a guy would have to do once he started losing his hair would be to keep shaving it until it came back as thick as he wanted it. Obviously, this does not happen, so why would it happen on your upper lip?

Old wives tale, although it does feel a little thicker simply because when you shave it it cuts the hair at an angle leaving a sharp edge. Try waxing instead and it will grow back soft and not so noticable like baby hair. Also, you have to wax less often than you have to shave and with time, less hair will grow back.

IT IS A WISE TALE!!!
I shave mine and have been doing so for the past 5-6 yrs.
The reason people think it is thicker is because when it is coming back it feels stubbly only because of it being so short.
It is true than once you wax it comes back thicker. When you pull it by the root it opens the folicle and makes the folicle larger because the hair has a root that is bulb shaped, the bottom is larger and stretches the skin when extracted, which stimulates the folicle and makes the hair come back fuller/thicker.

Hun it is absolutely true so i would recommend you to stop. Its the same with your arms and legs therefore it is much better either to:
1. Shave less often OR
2. Wax them instead
What about your facial hair you can use some waxing stripes which has the same effect but the hair grows less often or i would recommend you to pluck them. I have got this friend who did that and after a while her facial hair stoped grawing. Amazing isn't it? And if this is not good enough for you you can try lazer treatment in salons. Best of luck hun and i hope this helped.

Anytime you shave your hair anywhere on your body-- like your legs, for example... the hair that grows back will FEEL thicker because it's been coarsely chopped off.
Fine, thin hair on your face and arms will feel coarser and thicker when it grows back from being shaved, for the same reason. Your hair isn't actually any thicker than it was, it just feels that way.

yes and no. the way hairs grow is that they have a thick base and taper to a fine point. if you shave a hair, you cut away the fine point and leave a thick truck which will eventually grow out and will make the hair look thicker and more full, (like a cylinder instead of a cone). if you wax the hair, it pulls the hair out, and the hair must regrow from scratch, in which case it will grow again with a tapered tip and will not look as thick.

I have seen people in the salon, who have their "mustache" waxed and it never comes back again. But I have also seen women come back with darker, courser hair on their upper lip. They say it is because the pore gets bigger which allows the new hair to grow larger. I guess it happens to some people.

it is actually true, if you shave with a razor it makes it worse, i would suggest waxing it or buying one of those shaving things they advertise on the tv, it shaves but it is not really a razor, you can buy it for $9.99c or less a walmart or a drug store, it is better than using razors, and i doubt u would want u face looking like ur husband's.

Total wives tale, no truth to it whatsoever. It might look thicker but that is because you have trimmed of the thinner part of the hairs.

It is just an illusion. Cutting the hair causes the end to be blunt, so it looks thicker. I still wouldnt do it, waxing doesnt have the same effect, I perfer wax myself.
