People who come to this country and take all the measures to become a citizen are not illegal. If you do not have a real answer, why do you answer the question?

I don't know anyone who does not know the difference under 10 years old, my grandson thinks when he hears you talking about illegal aliens your talking from outer space. Most semi educated people know the difference, educate the rest.

First of all, you'll probably get reported because you just said 'alien.' Apparently that word is not allowed here.

I thought I DID know the difference between the two until I started coming here to Yahoo Answers. Come to find out, even though I was born in the USA, and have never left the USA....I'm still an immigrant. LOL

Because they never bother to read either a dictionary or the law.

Anyone in this country who is not a citizen is an alien. Every tourist, every traveler, every legal resident non-citizen, every ambassador.

And anyone in this country who was not born here but wants to live here permanently (or long term) is an immigrant.

Neither of those has anything to do with whether laws were followed. But we've already established nobody cares about the law.

I'm not at all a religious person, but perhaps God created Human Beings, and Man created laws. Perhaps God's Human Beings are the center of the universe, and Man's laws are little more than a Red Herring.

In my view, the distinction between "immigrant" and "illegal alien" is little more than a Red Herring. All that is relevant is that they are Human Beings.

If you emigrate legally, then when you arrive, you're a citizen. People that did not emigrate legally are illegal aliens. 20 years of poor enforcement and mushy policy have left us with a big ???
where our immigration system should be.

All aliens are immigrants...but not all immigrants are illegal aliens. Some people don't know the difference because they are weak in logic or sloppy in language.

do you mean "not know" or "cannot tell" because they are both immigrants except one has done so legally. Just like in some churches I can't tell the difference from the the ho's or the preachers wife, but i sure know the difference.

Your question implies that the word 'immigrant' also implies legal status. I don't think that is correct. Emigration just means movement from one country to another. An 'immigrant' is one who has 'emigrated.' One does not have to have legal status to emigrate.

Because to distinguish the two would not serve to support the arguments of the left who have no leg to stand on.

Because immigrant doesn't mean breaking the law, and they want to be seen as heros trying to make a better life for themselves inserted of criminals
