o.k. i get the feet part or the larger numbers on the scale...it's the smaller divisions next to the 1/8 portion itself. Do I read it left to right or vice versa? Is each tic an inch? Why are there only 8 tics? I'm a little confused. thanks for your help.

On my scale, you read from left to right for the 1/8 and right to left for the 1/4 scale.

It has a 1/8 symbol on the left end and a 1/4 symbol on the right end. The left most 1/8 is broken down into 6 graduates. These represent 2 inch increments. After that the 1/8 is marked at 0, 4, 8, 12,16 feet and so on to the right end where the final marking is 92 feet.

The other numbers starting at the left are 0, 2, 4 and so on to the right and end with 46 on the far right These are the feet for the 1/4 scale portion. on the extreme right are 12 very small graduates representing 12 inches on the 1/4 scale.

Architect scales, such as 1/4˝ = 1-0˝ (1/48 size) or 1/8˝ = 1-0˝ (1/96 size), are used for structures and buildings. They are used to measure interior and exterior dimensions such as rooms, walls, doors, windows, and fire protection system details.Other scale tools include flat scales and rolling scales. Rolling scales have the advantage of being able to measure travel distances easily, an important feature when evaluating means of egress.1. Look closely at the dimensions shown on the faces of the tools. • Architect scales have numbers that run incrementally both from left to right and from right to left. A whole number or fraction to the left or right of the number line indicates the scale those numbers represent.• Engineer scales have numbers that run incrementally from left to right. The whole number to the left of the number line indicates the scale those numbers represent.2. Architect scales use fractions and have the following dimensional relationships:3/32 = 1 foot 1/4 = 1 foot 3/4 = 1 foot3/16 = 1 foot 3/8 = 1 foot 1 inch = 1 foot1/8 = 1 foot1/2 = 1 foot 1½ inches

A 1/8" scale is used to get correct distances on plans (drawings, blueprints, etc) that are drawn to a 1/8" scale. For instance, if a set of plans state " Scale: 1/8" = 1'-0" " then the 1/8" scale could be placed on the plans for measuring distance. The 1/8" scale simply has numbers (like 1 to 93) starting at one end. If you measure a line on the drawings with the scale and it indicates a lenght of 66, then that line is actually 66 feet long. If the drawings instead said " Scale: 1/8" = 1 mile " then the line would actually be 66 miles long.

From the far left to the far right the overall length is 16 feet, the shortest lengths on the left are two feet each and the middle length is 4 feet. The circle in a square with index lines is a north arrow with the darkest line pointing towards north.

1/8" on the page to a foot in the real world (it's scary out here, isn't it).
