My dog is just itching something awful - I have used the over the counter flea stuff that you squeeze down their back, plus a flea collar but he is going crazy with this and I can see fleas on him which of course means they're in my house and yard. Since it's mid September it has to get better soon because it will be colder here but I feel so bad for him. He can't even lay down for a few minutes before he is trying to get those darn fleas off of himself again. He is 8 years old and has never had such a bad time with them; I just wondered if fleas are worse than usual this year?

I forgot, I have also given him three baths with flea/tick shampoo. Nothing seems to give him any relief. Poor Guy!!

First of all the over the counter stuff at wal mart doesn't work. Go to the home depot and get a bag of stuff called "Over and Out" and spread it in your yard. I has the same active ingredient as frontline. Once you have treated your yard go to your vet and get what is called a capstar pill it's only like $5. It will kill every flea on your pet for 24 hours. Also get either some fronline or advantix and apply it once you have given it the capstar pill. Make sure to wait 2 to 3 day before and after giving it a bath before you apply it though. This should take care of your problem.

I don't know where you live, but the flea situation has been particularly brutal in the Carolinas. It just hasn't been cold enough in the winters the past two years to kill of anything, so all the little buggers are out en masse. Mosquitos, spiders, fleas, you name it. The only thing that's worked for us is a combination of 1-2 times a week of Capstar (a pill that will kill all fleas on the dog within a few hours, and is inexpensive) and K9 Advantix. The Raid fogger works really well in the house, but you're right--the little jumpers are absolutely horrible this year. Hopefully we'll have a nice snowy cold winter and it won't be so bad this time next year.

Frontline plus. It costs about $15 a tube and it actually works. Don't waste money on things that don't work. Most vets will sell it one tube at a time. (at least they do here) For your house go to WalMart and buy Mule Team Borax from the laundry detergent section. It's about $3 a box. Sprinkle it all over the carpets and walk it in. Leave it. It will kill the fleas because it has boric acid in it. I buy about 4 boxes a year and just douse the carpets and yard with it. You can also put it on furniture and sprinkle it on baseboard cracks. If and when you vaccum it up throw the bag out. The fleas hatch eggs every ten days. So you might have to do this twice at ten day intervals. It will work though. It should cost you less than $25 to get the fleas under control and about $15 per month to keep them that way if you just get the better products.

frontline works wonders with fleas. over the counter medicines rarely work. i have two large breed dogs and it only costs me £14 every couple of months for frontline. You can purchase this from your vet without a consultation as long as your dog has seen the vet before. you will need to know the weight of your dog as the correct amount has to be given. also i find there is less of a problem at my home since i have had laminate floor put in my living room and tiled the kitchen floor. expensive but well worth it.

Most otc topicals don't work or don't last for a full month.
I use Bio Spot which is an otc. It does work. I've used it for over 10 years on all my dogs and on all the rescues that I have had. These are all inside dogs and I haven't seen a flea or tick in over 10 years.

He may have a flea allergy. My parents have three dogs and two of them are allergic to fleas and they would always be scratching like crazy. So my mom took them to the vet and he had given them a shot for the flea allergy and suggested on puttin Frontline medicine on their back. It has helped them out very much and every three months they have to renew their shots for the flea allergy.

I agree with Ruth. The otc's are crap. I use Revolution on my cats and my dog. I have not seen a flea in years. For your dog's sake, spend a few dollars and get the good stuff.

I order mine from an online supplier and save a bunch. Many people will tell you this is bad, but I have never had a problem with this supplier. I have been using them for years.

OTC flea meds, collars & shampoos are worthless and are also down right dangerous to your dog. It can cause neurological issues, seizures and death. Get a good qaulity, safe flea med from your vet such as Frontline or Advantage.

Frontline. Expensive but worth it. It makes the fleas sterile and they cannot reproduce. The over the counter stuff, including all shampoos, sprays, etc., only kill the adult fleas, not their eggs, which are continually hatching 4 months after the adult is dead!

If your dog comes into the house you are going to have to treat the house and all the carpets as fleas love to live in carpet and they can stay in it a long time between feedings.
They are only on the dog to feed.
I have not ahd any this year. We had a lot of ticks but they were all dead on my dogs.
I use a monthly spot on product.
