Is it ok to pull the table cloth slowly and steadily until the bread is in front of you, hoping no one notices, or should you be more direct and lightly toss small chicken bones and other objects to get the host's attention?

I'd rather do a dance till the end of the table, stuff the bread in my mouth, and tell my hostess, "Don't mind the dance moves, Ma'am. Was only trying to lose some weight before I could let my body have more carbohydrates. No offense! Now, don't look at me like that, it's very rude to stare at your guests, ya know, Dudette, I mean, Ma'am!"

LOL I vote for throwing the chicken bones...NOT!
All you have to do is ask if someone could please pass the bread. You could mention the host's name if they are close by since you don't know the name of the person it is next to.

if that doesn't work.... tape together several forks until the length desired is achieved...and pierce the piece of choice...balance it back to your plate and politely say:
"where did you get these scrumptious croissant Mrs. Dobbs?"
