Please disregard all the posters who mention greyhounds. Greyhounds are sprinters - they do not have the stamina to keep up with a human over any distance. Retired racers are also trained to run all out at top speeds and retraining them to jog along with a human takes a lot of time. It isn't impossible to turn a grey into a running partner but they do not have a natural affinity for it.
Any dog from the working or herding groups would be a really good fit. In particular Siberian Huskies were bred to lope along for miles on end. They absolutely love it and actually need to be in a home that caters to their high energy needs. But check out http://www.akc.org and look at the various working breeds to find one that works for your lifestyle.

it depends... Larger breed dogs are great to run with when they are younger, but in pure-breeds, if that is what you want to get, will develop hip dispasia (where the hip joint comes out of the socket). So, I reccomend getting a meduim sized dog, probably mixed breed. My brother has a Rottweiler/Pitbull mix, and that dog is FAST as hell.... Also you would want the dog to be trained to run with you and not drag you down. Training is VERY important. You want the dog to be at your side at all times. And stop when you stop, or say to stop, and not go chase cats or other dogs, or people. Good luck

Aside from the toy breeds and breeds with extremely short legs, almost any breed can be trained as a running partner. I run with my cocker spaniel and she loves it (and is quite a good little athlete)! If you're considering getting a "running partner", I'd look at your housing situation, grooming commitment, family situation, etc. before picking a specific breed.

Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Samoyed, Norwegian Elkhound, Dalmation, Weimeraner, Visla, German Shorthair Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Pointer,English Setter, Gordon Setter, Irish Setter - see them all at www.akc.org & see which ones personalities would also fit best with your lifestyle. Then contact a member of the breed's club (also on website) & buy from one that tests & certifies their breeding dogs free from hip dyspasia & other genetic defects known to the breed. This is the best way to ensure a healthy companion & jogging partner for life!

Depends on how fast you expect to run. Over time you'll need to get faster dogs and eventually you'll have one of every kind. Not bad if you have the room and money for supporting them. Not good if you live in an apartment. I'd recommend a robot dog with adjustable speed settings.

There are many breeds who love to go for runs, are you looking for a larger dog? A medium or small dog?
There are so many dogs in shelters that have tons of energy and love to run!

We had an Alaskan Malamute. They are bred to run and love it. But they get really strong so you need to get alot of training with it or it'll pull you down the street. Plus it's good for them to get out and run.
