The initiative was designed for courses of over £3000 in value, i.e. usually not a vocational course, try undergrad or postgrad diplomas (though post-grad diplomas tend to be more expensive).

I would suggest working either part time or a lessor role in the company of your choice relevant to the studies you are doing, so that you can apply or see the relationship between theory to practice and practice to academic theory.

Be warned though that jobs that demand more than 8 hours a day and eats into your weekends should be avoided. Alternatively, take weekend jobs such as retail so that you may have two free days on the weekdays. However, you may have to consider halting the job when it comes to the crucial periods such as final exams or projects to pass the whole paper.

Young children at that age (one and upwards) can be managed by able and capable grand parents up to around the impressionable age.

The common old wives tale is that children need parents when they are young.

When they hit 8 to 11-ish, that is when they need you around more as they become easily impressionable up to the age of 22. (i.e. not many know how to manage their work, social and financial lives, part evident in resulting in today's single parenthood.)

That is not to say that you should not be around them at all; This means you have a good 1 to 10 years working and studying duration before getting out of the workforce fulltime into parttime for the next 10 years or so.

Because they are short of tea ladies, dinner ladies, and lollipop ladies. Not because they are short of engineers or even people who know their way round a computer. Go for it! Ask all over, especially the college because they have a vested interest in getting ppl onto courses.
