You will find that about 85% of recovering alcoholics have a substantially higher than average IQ with far higher than average earning capacity than normal folk, this is of course provided they are in recovery. Arguably, yes, being drunk all the time will put you in a losing position, however, when you sober up, life is good!

They are alcoholics and no longer in control of anything. The alcohol addiction has taken over their mind and body. They are loosers in the biggest way. An alcohol can function at an alcoholic level until the liver and pancreas are destroyed. The mental functions decline early but most people don't see this happen because it is slow and excuses are made and accepted by everyone. We all end up loosers because alcoholism affects everyone. Alcohol is big business like drugs, tobacco. These are all regulated by the US government. The families who own these companies have their family members in government keeping the addictions alive.

Not if they keep their drinking under control, even if they drink a lot. Of course, excessive drinking will lead to inability to handle the jobs they are involved in, or they make a mess of their marriages, and they would then end up losers.
I drink rarely, believing, through Christian teaching, that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and it must be treated with respect.

Hey, I drink all the time. Last night I bedded down with a famous brunette. So THERE!!
How I woke up with an ugly witch this morning still remains a mystery. I'll have it figured out after 3 more drinks!

It depends on how much they are drinking at a time. If they get drunk every night...Then they are supressing something emotionally and they wont be able to move past it until they stop drinking and actually deal with their problems instead of taking it out on everyone else...But someone who has a glass of wine or one beer every night is just relaxing. But people who have to live life drunk need help. And trust me on this one, YOU CAN'T HELP THEM. THEY HAVE TO HELP THEMSELVES!

Depends on the level they attain, I suppose. For some it really is a disease. For others, it's simply a habit. It's impossible to judge without knowing the reasons someone drinks.
Then again, even Yahoo! seems to advocate drinking to some degree.

Alcoholics are suffering a disease, like any other disease. They wouldnt have known when they had their first ever drink they were gonna get addicted.
Some people unfortunately have addictive personalities and therefore could get addicted to coca cola or painkillers if it wasnt alcohol.
