Have heard it blamed on there being too many skinny models in magazines, but this sounds like rubbish to me. Poisonous upbringing? Me too, but it gave me the drive to become self-reliant, rather than self-destroying. Bad relationship? Why not find a better one?
And how do you help such women??

A bit of a generalization, but I do believe there's some truth to it. Unfortunately, most value for women, according to the media, is placed on their appearance; however, for men, it's placed on their accomplishments. So, basically women have less control over their own value, so this reflects, somewhat, on how they see themselves, hence lower self-esteem.

I don't think it helps when growing up that boys are naturally physically stronger than girls, so many use intimidation to get what they want...starting with dinner money, and then progressing onto other things. I think this has a lasting effect on a number of girls, and coupled with societys obsession with appearance, may feel that they are useless unless the look perfect.
I find that the best way to help women, is to completement on aspects of their personality (e.g. intelligence). They may even be taken aback by this, as they are used to comments such as "NICE TlTS DARLIN!!" In time they will realise that you mean it.

It all comes with life experiences. I've met plenty of women who are not the least bit low in self confidence. And my self esteem ain too bad.
Saying that, I've met guys too who have abit of low self esteem. So the only way you can try to help such people is don't put them down, and encourage them to believe in themselves abit more.

Because women are expected to fufill so many different roles in society, and men are only expected to work a job....that's it ....period!
We are not superwomean....we cannot be everything to everybody, and when we fail to live up to that standard, we blame ourselves. Because society has taught us we should be this way....that we should think of ourselves last .
Also it is due to the fact that most women have been treated like a doormat by the men in their lives!
You help them by offering encouragement, positive reinforcement, compliments...sincere ones only, let her know you appreciate her, tell her what you like about her, really listen to her when she needs to talk. Do not be critical, NEVER tell her it just in her imagination or to just get over it! Show her she is special!

I think that is a rather sweeping statement, there are as likely to be as many men with low self esteem as women, it just manifests differently.
There are many reasons people are like this and it is not something that anyone can help someone with, the cure is recognising it in ones self and being astute and strong enough to build up your self confidence.

MEN!! I'm not a libber but I know from experience how much damage they can do. I've been divorced for over 25 yrs. and I still hear his voice in my head, You're a lousy wife, a lousy housekeeper, a lousy mother. I'm extremely sensitive to degrading remarks from men. I have remarried and although he is wonderful in many ways, he does it occasionally too. The first time it happens to you, try to talk about it, the second time walk.

I think is in the opposite way, I think women have better self esteem that the men... that is why men is always trying to show or being the strong... I hope it helps..

You are talking about someone you know maybe. Where I live its men that have to be drunk to gain esteem.
Its men that smoke to look cool
Its men that have to have a beer belly to weigh more in order to be big
Its men that ride noisy motorbikes, have tatoos and drive noisy cars to sound big.
Its men that talk loudly
Its men that fart randomly to sound like lions
Etc

Society pegs women to be caregivers not care takers. To give and never receive. some are weaker than others.
