Some passages can be taken literally. But of course, there are passages that should not be interpreted literally (or used at this modern times of ours) as some have been used in the times when it was useful to be adopted. Like stoning to death someone who works on a Sabbath Day. Or putting to death any man found sleeping with a man the way he sleeps with a woman. A punishment by death during those early times when the Jews were just newly uprooted from Egyptian rule when only very few of them were probably knowledgeable about what is good or what is evil. With people not knowing where they are heading or if ever their choice of joining Moses was really good for them or not. A certain type of martial rule is needed to control an unruly crowd (Jews are noted by God to be obstinate and stubborn) and that punishment was found effective as a crowd control and a way to purge every evil thoughts playing on their minds.
In this modern times even, discernment is more important in reading the Bible than making your own interpretations. There is a danger that literal interpretation may lead someone to a dangerous action which no longer is applicalbe to the present time even if the Bible is claimed to be an everlasting Book of God.

Coming from a very spiritual family with closeness to God, they have always told me the bible is interpreted in many different ways. That's why God made everyone different and able to define their own beliefs. If you've noticed most if not all religions have the same bible and live very different lives. The bible is just a handbook of what we as people can use to get us closer to God, once you are close to God, he will help you understand it better and will put it into your heart the way he feels is best for you and your life...
The heavens will be filled with people from all walks of life and beliefs, let the bible be your guide, then you will see that it truly does have value and great meaning.

There's a lot of extreme opinion here! So my view.
The Bible is a work of literature, a piece of history valuable in its own right. It is the word of man not God, and parts attempt to show a blueprint for a reasonable philosophy of life.
It can't be taken literally as a set of orders because it contradicts itself too many times; nor can it be taken as a literal history because there's too much evidence against things like creation.
It's neither a direct quote from a supreme being, nor a worthless piece of toilet paper. It's just the Bible.

He may be right in some ways. I know that Jehovah witnesses do not believe in blood transfusions because in the bible it states how no one should "eat blood".They're reasoning is that if God does not approve "eating blood" then He certainly would not approve of drawing foreign blood into one's system via a needle, seeing that needles and IV's were non existent in those times. I read the bible and they're are a whole host of things you'll find that if taken literally, really won't pertain to modern living. Another story involved how one should give half of their sheep or goats to thy neighbor...But to take something like this and use it as symbolism to mean something of our time, then therein lies a root of why we have so many different religions and interpretations of the bible.

The priest is completely correct. The bible is a collection of ancient myths poorly strung together and frequently revised throughout history to suit whatever particular authority wanted a revision. Perhaps moral values can be taken from it, but it can in no way be seriously considered in a literal way.

Apparently the priest never took a class in Hermeneutics. The Bible is the inspired word of God. It should be studied and then you will learn what to take literally and what are symbols and such.

If you accept that Jesus left behind a group of followers then he would have wanted his teaching to have not many but one voice . that voice is his church. That is why the church has through history held counsels to agree on questions of doctrinal belief. The Bible is to be read with due consideration of the historical and cultural context it was written in. Private interpretation will and DOES lead to many different views.

My friend, that's the excuse that u will hear from all priests in all religions because all the so called holy books are full of absurdities and stupid stuff that can not be accepted by a rational mind. The question is that has god sent us a puzzle ? if it is the word of god we must all be able to understand it without someone telling us what it means. good luck

The bible has no value at all. If the new testament had stopped at the gospels, I might could accept most of that. Once Paul got involved it went down hill from there. Paul was a male chauvinist homophobe, his writings reflect that. Please apply common sense. If you see something that you know is contrary to God, than don't believe it. Any book or person that claims theirs is the only way to God is a lie.
