Because its toxic,it contains Theo Bromine !Even small amounts of Theo bromine, can cause vomiting and restlessness in pets. Larger doses can be fatal. While most pet owners expect a dog to develop an upset stomach after eating a large amount of chocolate, few realize its danger or toxic potential.
The lethal dose of Theo bromine depends on the size of the dog and the type of chocolate. Ounce for ounce, baking chocolate has six to nine times as much of the substance as milk chocolate does.
Estimates of the smallest amounts that can be fatal are:
4 ounces of milk chocolate or 1/2 ounce of baking chocolate for small dogs, such as Chihuahuas and toy poodles.
8 ounces of milk chocolate or 2 ounces of baking chocolate for medium-sized dogs, like cocker spaniels and dachshunds.
8 ounces of milk chocolate or 4 ounces of baking chocolate for large dogs, including collies and Labrador retrievers.
Cats have much different eating habits and seldom are poisoned by chocolate.
If an accident occurs, a veterinarian should be consulted. Treatment may require inducing vomiting, stabilizing the animal's heartbeat and respiration, controlling seizures and slowing the absorption of Theo bromine. If the animal already is comatose, its stomach may need to be pumped.

Chocolate contains theobromine and is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. It is in the same family as caffeine. It takes 100 to150 mg/kg of theobromine to cause a reaction. Bakers chocolate has the highest amount of theobromine. There's no antidote for this poisoning. Best thing to do is induce vomiting in the first 1 to 2 hours if quantity is not known. Give your dog activated charcoal, it may inhibit absorption of the toxin. If you suspect that your dog has ate chocolate call your vet immediately. Your vet may have to give your dog an anticonvalescent if neurological signs are present. Oxygen, intravenous medications and fluids may be needed to protect the heart.

While the clam is no chocolate, I know it takes alot of chocolate to seriously kill or harm a dog. If your dog does get into some chocolate and your not sure how much the dog ate. Force alot of water with salt added to it to get him to vomit. If no luck call your vet and see what they advise. Sometimes its just a matter of 24 hours and a few loose stools and it will all clear its self from the dogs system. The clam is the sugar and the bakers chocolate thats not good for them.

There's a substance in chocolate that's toxic to dogs.

We had this happen to our smaller dog (abt 20 lbs). She got into the Hershey's Kisses at Xmas time. The vet gave her an injection and some pills but she was one hurting little dog. Her belly was like a rock and she screamed and snapped when I tried to touch her - never snapped in her life before or since.

They have doggie candy that's made of carob and isn't harmful to dogs. If your dog likes chocolate he might like that.

Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.
