i see a lot of comments like "shoot them all"

do you people realize that is like saying that all black people are criminals because you saw one on t.v., or that all hispanics are illegal, or all whites are racist? i've seen some really crazy stuff on here, like people saying that pit bulls brains keep growing and their skulls do not, and this makes them all snap one day. that is the most un-supported, retarded thing i have heard so far. they do not stand a chance of "turning on you and your kids" unless they are raised badly, like any dog. some people.

I am certainly NOT against the breed, but as with any dog, I think you have to take a look at the breeder AND the owners. My guess is that you get a dog (of any breed) that has come from a line that has been bred to fight (and by this I mean the breeder has bred only the most agressive animals they have over and over again) and you could have a problem. The bummer about this is that if the buyer/adopter doesn't do their research or know this: problems. Then, couple that with owners who abuse or simply don't manage/train their animal well and, wow, an even bigger problem! Again, this could be any breed of dog. The bigger guys do get a bad rap, mostly because the potential for damage and death is a bit higher (what about the Rottie who killed that poor woman in San Francisco? Talk about BAD owners/bad breeders).
Still, the Pit used to be "America's family dog". I think Petey from our gang was a Pit or Pit mix, wasn't he?
Banning a dog of any breed is a bad idea, I think, but I almost want to see mandatory training classes for anyone who gets a dog of any size! The lame-o owners are giving all of us a bad rap!
For the record, I have a small dog and it is a struggle to keep up with the training, but oh sooooo necessary!
Good luck to the Pit I say! Sadly, he is much maligned...

Well Pit Bulls are my favorite breed. Yeah BSL ads are ridiculous and depress the hell out of me. I own a Pit Bull and he is the best dog I have ever had. BSL is just like putting a bandaid over the problem. Banning a breed is not just discrimination but it is also inhumane. Okay so people who support this legislation say they want to keep Pit Bulls out of irresponsible owner's hands... do they not see they would also be keeping this wonderful breed out of the hands of people who can love, care and treat them with respect and the responsibility they need. Besides if drug dealers really want a guard dog they will find one Pit Bull or not. All dogs can be trained to attack and bite. ALL OF THEM. So if we ban Pits who will be next? Will it be the Blood Hound? The Mastiff? Who knows.
BSL is a pile of poo. Pit Bulls are the number 1 most abused dog in America. I mean my God only 1 out of every 9 Pits will live out there natural life! That is not because they get hit by cars... it is because irresponsible owners and a bad rap! Many shelters will not even consider Pits for adoption because BSL is so out of control painting these dogs to be these horrid monsters that cannot help but sinking there teeth into people! On average over 1 million Pits in America are euthanized... not because they bit someone... but because they are Pit Bulls.

Swim,
Did you ever consider that you do not hear about golden retrievers attacking because the media chooses not to report it? The media plays a HUGE role in the bad rap that Pits have. "If it bleeds it leads" mentality. They want the most exciting story possible so they will lie if need be they will also not report other stories because it is less exciting. According to the American Temperament Society Pit Bulls have a higher passing rate than Golden Retrievers. Pits at 86% while GR are at 76%. Meaning that Pits on average have better temperaments. Hmm. Please educate yourself.

I don't know. I've seen some that are the sweetest dogs. But I've heard so many stories of nice pits turning on people or other animals. Of course, the ones that turn on people were probably bred in a cardboard box somewhere - who knows what genetic defects are perpetuated that way.

I love all animals and believe it's important to give all animals the benefit of the doubt. Spay and neuter and train well and carefully and give the pit a lot of love, and they're probably no more likely to bite than any other dog.

Actually, a pit bull was bred to be a fighting dog. I'm sure they can be wonderful pets but then again they can be very dangerous. People like to buy them as status symbols or as fighting dogs. People steal them out here to be fighting dogs. Personally, I don't want my children around them. I have no idea how their owners have treated them or socialized them. It's too dangerous. Then again there are a lot of dangerous breeds. Pit Bulls are fighters and feisty by nature. The whole brain thing you said is just silly. What is really the problem is all these people who get these dogs and don't properly train or socialize their pet. That is the real problem

No, I'm not against them. I do however wish they were 'regulated', before they basically become extinct. There are SO many responsible owner of pits who have wonderful dogs, but idiotic people get these dog for the wrong reason and THEY are the ones perpetuating the bad reputation for these dogs. Punish the deed NOT the breed.

Also I have noticed most people here you bad mouth pits don't actually know a darn thing about the breed personally, and are just fueling the anti-pit fire.

No i'm not against them at all. One of my friends owns a pit bull & an american bull dog. They may both be somewhat big but they are the sweetest dogs I have ever met! The pit bull was pretty hyper & rowdy when she was a puppy but knew what was going on cause she instantly toned down & watched her behavior when my sister came over while she was pregnant...the dog seemed to know (without being trained) to be careful & not jump on her or anything. It's quite amazing the things a dog can sense....even a pit bull or bull dog.

Amen! I love the breed, LOVE IT! I have seven, and have never had any problems with them, NEVER! I also have four children that grew up with them. Like I have said in an earlier answer that I gave, it is all the stupid people that don't have all of the facts that think they are bad dogs. I wish I could download some of the facts that I found on pit bulls, but that would take up the whole answer site. Good for you, and sticking up for this wonderful breed of dog, for anyone that don't own one, or don't know one, read the facts before you judge!

There ARE many great pit bulls.. there are also a minority that WILL 'snap'...I love all dogs..but will never again trust a pit bull.
Perhaps the lineage of pit bulls in our town is more aggressive than others? or not the norm? I was in the vet's office to have stitches removed the other day..and a call came in about a sick pit bull..the vet's assistant told the caller that the doctor doesn't accept pit bull clients...So, then the vet came out to look at my dog, and the assistant told him about the caller..He said, I would like to help all dogs, but if it hadn't been for my steel toed boots, I would have lost my foot to the last pit bull I tried to help..So, never again.
Then, they got to talking about the Chihuahuas that had come in earlier in the day...3 Chihuahuas had been in their own yard, playing with children, when a pit bull climbed the fence and killed one and injured the other 2 , one of them died at the vet's..the 3rd one was still in ICU.

I have several local friends who have been attacked by their own pit bulls...None of them were bad owners..but the dogs just 'snapped' and attacked...so, I wonder...Could it be that our pit bulls are just worse than those in other areas? This is a very nice resort town..

It should be the owners who are shot for making the animals mean . An animal only knows what it is taught . I have seen chihuaha dogs that have turned on their owners . If people teach the dogs to be mean , that is how they will turn out . My friend's mother has a pit bull and it thinks that it is a lap dog . It would rather lick the skin off of you rather than bite you .

That is rotten. I have a pit and she's nicer than my oher dog.
The problem is more of the inbreeding and lack of training on the owners part. They don't realize that it's so important to go to a trainer, or train the dog themselves..and it makes the rest of use who have lovely pits look bad.
We can say the same about those little tiny purse dogs that have all that fur and nipping at our ankles and that uncontrollable barking.
My pit loves children and she loves to be around people as any other dog does.
