Retinopathy of prematurity
A blinding condition happens in premature babies who are born before the full term(36 weeks of gestation)
Depending on the stage of the disease it can cause no problems to severe problems like blindness
All premature babies are examined for this. It used to be more common in old days when 100% oxygen used to be given to premature babies which accelerate this condition. Nowadays oxygen of 40% is given to stop this.
All premature babies need intensive examination by a paediatric ophthalmologist.
