Even when you have great friends (I can't complain) you're still going to have to be your own very best friend, well at least if you're not self destructive...
I've had one best friends for...6 years now and we have had our ups and down, fights and hilarious moments, and the fact that we're still friends after a number of idiot fights, some that have lasted months, makes me believe that we will become old senile old women that go out for coffee on a sunny afternoon to just chat like only women can... (I don't know if this is the answer you were going for, but I just felt like sharing :))

Ouch! you seem to be having a rough time... sorry!
I think you have to try and stay positive, not in any reality can you say that 99% of the worlds people are cruel or selfish....
50% perhaps.
Try to be open with folk and don't judge them too early on, think what you would feel like if a group of actually wonderful people took one look at you and said " yuk! what an old grouch!" based on only a first impression!
If you smile... most people smile back!
Good luck! I hope mankind doesn't let you down too much. I spend most of my working day surrounded by people who either have suffered or want to make people suffer or were caught in the act of making some-one suffer! Yet i have still managed to find a wonderful wife, great friends and some good neighbors.
Give people a chance :)

I think a better question is, where do you find GENUINE friends once you're out of highschool. heh. I have 1 true friend I've known since I was 19 (i'm 35 now) and we communicate long distance now since I've moved. I have not been able to find anyone else who is worthy of my friendship.

There is one sure place to find a genuine friend... and that is within you.
It doesn't matter if the rest of the world is selfish. You don't have to be. :)

People tend to attract like-minded individuals... Maybe look at yourself and change what is selfish about you... Then you will attract the unselfish friends you want..
