( Peter the first Pope in action )

The Bible Acts 5 : 4 -10
Ananias and Sapphira

Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."
When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?" "Yes," she said, "that is the price." Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."
At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

( Now that smells of robbery, extortion and murder to me. )

Have a blessed day.

Well, he is a head of state - of the Vatican. Actually I shouldn't have brought that up because those guys mostly just wave their hands too.

OK, he is responsible for the continuation of a fashion that would otherwise disappear in a flash. It's sad to say, but people have by and large lost respect for flowing robes, pointy hats and colorful beanies.

Oh, and I forgot, he is the commander of that formidable military force, the Swiss Guard. Nothing is quite as intimidating as a row of puffy-trousered men with lances. And if push came to shove, those Swiss army knives can be deployed in a heart-beat. One shudders at the very thought.

He succeeds Peter in his role as chief of the apostles. In Acts 1:46, the apostles begin replacing themselves. Mathias succeeds Judas Iscariot. All Catholic and Orthodox bishops are direct successors by ordination to the apostles. Unlike Protestant ministers who chose themselves as the head of their church, Catholic and Orthodox bishops are called from the community to serve as a replacement until the Resurrection and the coming of Jesus again.

The bishop of Rome, currently Benedict XVI, is the successor to Peter in his ministry. It is the bishop of Rome who succeeds Peter because that is where Peter was martyred. St. Peter's Basillica is the tomb of Peter. There are other successors to Peter such as the Patriarch of Antioch, but the earliest reference to papal authority is from the third bishop of Antioch who was ordained by Peter and John and trained by them, Ignatius in about the year 103.

His functional job is to serve as the bishop of the metropolitan church of Rome. He is the Patriarchal bishop of most of the Church in the West and a little in the East. This means he is the bishop primarily responsible for the well being and good order of the community in the West. Patriarch roughly means grandfather. He is the court of last appeal for Christians who have a complaint against a local community or its leaders. He serves as the center of unity. For example, when they elect a new Patriarch in Antioch the first task of that Patriarch is to seek communion with Rome. The first task of the bishop of Rome is to provide him with a pallium.

Finally, Rome must approve any teaching for it to hold universal jurisdiction. The pope confirms that the teaching was held in the ancient church.

He is the manager of an tremendous underground network of investments and agendas. He makes decisions each day that would make a goat puke. He makes life and death decisions everyday. Then after he wakes up, he waves his hand all day.

He is the leader of the Catholic world. He is supposed to set the tone for the administration, offer spiritual advice to world leaders, and help ease the pain and suffering of those less fortunate, while trying to spread Catholicism.
