I started a new job and my new boss is a female from Glendale, CA. She is Hispanic and grew up in L.A. She is new to KS and I told her that I have a great dentist. I wanted her to know that the hygenist is hispanic too without coming out and saying just that, so I said, "The hygenist's name is Ana." I know she picked up on this clue because she said, "You really like you're dentist, huh." Do you think she took offense at my obvious attempt to let her know the hygenist was hispanic like her or do you think that she might appriciate my attempt at diplomacy by not coming right out and saying it?

What's the right way to communicate to a minority that he or she would be comfortable at my dentist/doctor because they are a diverse doctor in a midwest city?

First of all, you don't mention whether your dentist is hispanic, in fact you only mentioned the hygenist is hispanic, so why should your boss be comfortable with that?
You're attitude seems to state that a hispanic woman would only be comfortable with other hispanics. You assume along racial lines and were stereotyping her. You also go further in assuming that, Ana is a hispanic name. Unless you wrote it out, she might have only decided you said Anna. It sounds to me like you came across as weird. And mentioning it again will only cuase problems. I wouldn't worry about your boss or her abilities to make herself comfortable. I'm sure she's capable.

i'm Puertorican and that i have had undesirable reports with human beings of diverse races. i develop into married to a white guy who develop right into a jerk, that would not recommend I hate all white human beings. My boyfriend is British and as you may guess, he's likewise white. i appreciate him with all my heart. you assert you worry them because of gangs?!? were you all in favour of gangs or what?!? so some distance as i recognize, gangs do not do something to each person except provoked. were you in a rival gang?!? I easily have under no circumstances been in a stupid gang so i'd not come once you. I come from a sturdy respectable relations. quite some Hispanics are demanding operating human beings. there are quite some sturdy Hispanic human beings obtainable. you won't be able to blame the entire race for regardless of exceeded off to you, the picture of i will't and could not blame whites or blacks for the hell ONE or 2 human beings placed me by. Hispanics do not look down upon the whites or each person else for that count number. I easily have submit with adequate prejudice and stereotype in my existence. you need to have a communicate with a Hispanic individual and get to entice close the guy. you'll discover out how large we are. there are quite some human beings of all races who might want to be valuable or who might want to be evil. don't be pointing the finger at one race on my own reason it really is not truthful. This u . s . a . went by hell on september eleventh, 2001. center Easterns were responsible for this. we received't blame the entire race because of what ONE crew did to the u . s .. i recognize center jap those who're easily valuable. yet another difficulty is that there are gangs in all races not in basic terms ours. So do not decide! we are all human beings and all of us make blunders. Do you spot my element? Have a blessed day!

You're boss said that because you probably came off looking foolish talking about your dentist all the time. She probably could give two shits about the dentist you go to.

You shouldn't treat you hispanic boss as a "minority" (that means you're putting yourself above her) just treat her like you would anyone else, and things will be much easier, and a lot less uncomfortable for all.

Well, I feel it just depends on the tone of voice-the mannerisms that were used. I know when people have said remarks to me like that I was just like "so, whats your point?"-I really don't give a shiit if they are my race or not, I am comfortable with any-as long as they don't attack me-eeesh!! I know you tired to not offend her, but maybe she thought otherwise, just make a comment about it discreetly-like "oh, the other day, when I said that comment about my dentist, I just stated that her name was Ana, because I know of a lot of Hispanics who always are interested in meeting their own race, in a new environment in which they don't know anyone-I didn't mean to offend"-or something along the lines.

I think she knew. I'm Hispanic and I wouldn't be offended at all.
Was she looking for a dentist or were you just trying to let her know she wasn't the only Hispanic you know?
They don't have many Hispanics up there do they?

Why would a minority person care whether or not her dentist or doctor is the same race (as long as they are a reputable dentist or doctor)? Would you care if your dentist was white (or whatever race you happen to be)? Does it matter?

Yes, I think she did take offense. Race should not matter and you should never bring that up. Shame on you!

She probably took offense at the fact that you thought she should go to a dentist that employs Hispanics and not because he's a great dentist.

I Know you were trying to be nice but in this situation you really just shouldnt have said anything at all. Sometimes even though you mean well, people may take offense to things, thats just the way some people are. I know where you are coming from but sometimes people don't care about race when it pertains to things like that, it would probably be best to just let her imply it on her own. Sometimes you just have to play it by ear with people. What offends one person may not offend another! : )

What's the right way to communicate to a minority.......

There's your problem... You're seeing her as a minority instead of as a person...

If my boss were hispanic and my hygeniest were also hispanic it would never occur to me that she might be more comfortable with my dentist because of that... Maybe because it makes no difference to me...
