Per my search, the spelling for this medical condition is hemifacial microtia. Latin is oh so difficult to spell and it is used extensively in medicine. Defined separately, hemifacial pertains to the face. Microtia (mi·cro·tia) (mi-kro´shə) [micro- + ot- + -ia] gross hypoplasia or aplasia of the auricle (pinna) of the ear, with a blind or absent external acoustic meatus. Simplifying further, aplasia pertains to failure of some tissue or organ to develop; while hypoplasia is defined as, underdevelopment of an organ because of a decrease in the number of cells. There was a photo on the website from which I copied these definitions. The able and expert assistance of good physicians ( a plastic surgeon and an EENT or ear specialist) will help your child live a normal life. She may need a little technological assist in the form of a hearing aid but we live in an age where technology is well developed and adequate.

Your love and acceptance will more than compensate for what your beloved daughter seemingly lacks and remember that this is just on the outside. We place too much importance on looking good physically these days. What your daughter needs is to feel good from the inside, secure in the knowledge that you love and care for her enough to ask how you could best look after her welfare on Yahoo answers.

Bless you for being so loving. Stay strong and focused. Your reward will be in a daughter with a strong character who loves you sincerely...she will be twice blessed if she grows up to be just like you.

While I do not have a specific answer to your question since I have never heard of this condition, I still wanted to reach out and offer you support. My daughter has Cerebral Palsy, and while these are very different conditions, it doesn't change the fact that we both have children with special needs. I'd like to invite you to join an online support group for parents of children with disabilities and special needs. It's www.specialparent.org I'm sorry that I couldn't give you any information. I do wish your daughter the best.

I fostered a boy with neurofibromitios (Elephant Mans disease). Love and acceptance are the best Rx. Don't over pamper her treat her as normal and let the doctors do the visual repair. When she is old enough make her familiar with her medical problem so if other kids ask her questions she has the power to explain. Just enjoy loving her.
