I am a 31year old woman who just bought her first condo! One of the many reasons i was so excited to buy was because I am dying to own a dog- I grew up with a half-poodle half-terrier mix that I absolutely love, and want something like him. I am looking for a dog that is 40 pounds or less, one that doesn't shed much, and one that can be trained to be alone 9-5....... I plan on rescuing one, of course, but I need to figure out what would be a good fit for me so I can be on the lookout! Thanks......

I am a 31 year old woman who just bought her first condo! I am thrilled, because up until now, I haven't been ableto own a pet, and I can't wait to get a dog. The problem is, I'll be living in a 700 Sq. foot one bedroom condo on the 20th floor. I am looking for: a dog that would be a good fit in this space, one that doesn't shed too much, and one that won't completely freak out being alone during the day- (with talk radio on, of course) To those of you who say that I shouldn't even get one, there are a million people here in Chicago, NYC, etc, that have small dogs in condos, and they're doing just fine. There is a path right next to the building along the lake, and TONS of dog parks- so I am absolutely getting one. End of story. Now, I just need advice on good breeds for that situation (and don't worry- I WILL rescue, not purchase- firm believer)

You should look into rescuing a dog from a shelter or rescue group(many rescues are breed specific). In a post above it say's pugs don't shed much, I had one and he shed worse then anyother pet I've ever owned!!! I would stay away from terrier's, since they are so full of energy and spunk and I'd look for a breed that doesn't bark much. I have a rescued Cocker spainel, he's 30lbs, bairly shed's, doesn't bark much and is perfectly happy as a couch potatoe! As for the being alone from 9-5 if it doesn't work out for your dog you can look into doggie day care! Its a great option for working people to let their dogs have their energy and social needs met while your at work. Another note don't ever buy a dog from a petstore! All their pup's are from puppy mills and are offten shipped long distances from store to store. Petstore staff are trained to say the pets are from homes and not the mills it is all just a lie!

Well, it's tough to have a dog in an enclosed space for a long time, but if you insist you should get one that would appreciate staying inside and that would be a pug. They have small nasal passages so they can't stay outside too long in the summer, and no dog likes the cold so maybe that would be the perfect one. They have short hair and I don't think they shed all that much. You can also go with a lot of other small, short hair dogs...just find a website, like a shelter website in your area and see what dogs they have.

I live in a 38 storey condo. There are scads of dogs in this building and they all seem very happy. I don't hear them barking. One of my friends was invited to a picnic on the island for all the dog walkers in her building. Great way to make friends as well. Another friend takes his dog to doggy daycare two or three mornings a week. Another suggestion might be getting two small dogs so they can keep each other company, or a kitten with the puppy. Good luck!

A lhasa apso would be great dog for condo living. They don't require much exercise but they have a personality that will make you enjoy their company a lot.

If you plan to leave your dog alone while you go to work, make sure that the TV or Radio is on otherwise they'll be really sad. Maybe you can arrange to drop your dog off with someone nearby so that he has company while you're at work.

Poodles are smart, sweet, easily trained and don't shed. I think they're a great choice for an apartment dog.

NONE. I think it's mean to have a dog cooped up indoors all day with nobody to play with. If you really insist on getting a dog, treat it like you would a child: find a good doggie daycare. They need social interaction as much as people do.

Get a miniature poodle. You definitely don't want a huge dog in a small condo.

I suggest a toy breed. They require little exercise and tend to put lap dogs. I have a 6.8 lbs. 4.5 mth. old yorkie/chihuahua mix. I got her from the local animal rescue shelter.

any kind of a small dog is better for ya.
the smaller the dog the better.
a chi is a good dog and a Yorkie is a great one to.
either one of those dogs would do better for you in a living environment like that.
