You've got to be cool about this situation. In this relationship, it sounds as if there's a subtle dominance game between you and him as to who's in control of the whole thing. It sounds as if this guy's been reading up on those books on Successful Seduction techniques, and he's trying out the Cocky & Funny, or maybe the "treat 'em mean and keep 'em keen" approach.
Adopt the Mirror Tactic. Reflect his own tricks against him. If he talks about girls, you talk about boys. The more intimate, the better. Make him squirm slightly, because men are a lot more reluctant to talk about intimacy with boys than girls are to discuss other women.
If he puts you at arms' length, make sure your social calendar's got alternative places you can go to, and keep him at a distance as well.
And finally, if he keeps changing the subject, put him on the spot. Hijack his topics, bring the topic back to something you want him to discuss.
Mirror him. Try it. Have fun, good luck and, in the long term, adopting a boyfriend who's grown up some might be your best bet.

I reckon that he DOES fancy you. He will be talking about other girls because at the moment you are "just friends". He will be either thinking that he may as well get on with things as you are not going out together, or he is testing the water, trying to get a reaction out of you to see whether he should cross that line or not. I was in a similar situation once and eventually I took a deep breath and went for it. It turned out that the guy had liked me all along, GO FOR IT! You have nothing to lose.

DO NOT under any circumstances schpeil out your feelings to him! You are obviously good friends which is a good (but not perfect) place to start (I could go on to explain the "Friend" zone but thats another story).
You need to manoever your self into a social situation with him - preferably fueled by alcohol - you make a few flirty comments and if he does fancy you then he will make a move. If he doesn't then you'll know where you stand and can then make the decision to move on with your dignity intact.
P.S I'f you've got good legs wear a short skirt. If god blessed you with a good rack then wear a low cut top - But don't do both cos it's slutty! Remember - Men have basic triggers - they work on visual stimuli.

He's either;... fed up you talking about it,... he fancies you, he doesn't fancy you or he's hoping you'll move on so he can get someone else he has his eyes on,.... go find out,.. watch his reactions closely,. observe but do not read between the lines too much,.. be methodically honest,..

Do it. He wants you but is not saying it to you. he is changing the subject b/c he doesn't want to hear about who is interested in you. He wants you to be interested in him.
