I am the President of a group at my school. The group has been known to talk about ideas, yet never do anything. This year I want to take this club to new heights. But I also dont want people to be unhappy with my leading skills. I am not unfair, but I want more out of people than just ideas. I want action. We do a lot of community work, and I can handle that just fine. But it is being a leader trying to get out talks into actions. Once again stating, I do not want to be disliked. So, my question is what do I do to have the perfect medium? What do I do to satisfy our advisor, our community, and our members?

I served in the capacity of president of several organizations in our community and learned to assign members to committee chairs that were good at whatever the need was for a particular function or drive.

By tapping into resources and involving others-enthusiasm and excitement is generated motivating some great programs that would otherwise have fallen pretty flat.

I started out thinking I had to do it all myself until I finally wore myself out and caused resentment in the troops.

Warning-do not keep using the same ones to fill positions-that causes burnout in them and resentment in about everyone else.

Make sure you get key people I mean like two to four people from the same group that you can trust on, share with them your vision and get their ideas and point of view. Communicate with them often and tried to touch bases...create a master pland of what you want to do next and then and just then you can go ahead and allow more people into your group. Make sure everybody has their own duty and try to be polite don;t try to be miss congeniality so you don;t end up with no respect from your group just be normal and just.... Good Luck

A good leader encourages others to take the lead. As a chairperson on a number of committees one of my roles is to teach the vice- chair how to become chairperson. This is done by allowing and encouraging the vice-chair to take a lead role in planning and discussion. Assign other members of your group important roles again by encouraging them to take the lead. People want to feel useful so let them know how important their service is by allowing them to be of service. As President do not be quick to volunteer to do too much. Show confidence in your teams ability to accomplish tasks and if no one volunteers for a task or assignment reintroduce it at your next meeting. Form sub-committees to handle some things. Operating on sub-committees gives group members leadership experience.
We cannot make people do things that they just don't want to do. Find the people in your group that are dedicated to doing what it takes to make the group successful. Above all as a group do not try to take on too much. If only 50% of your group is committed to volunteering and doing what is necessary then it is best to achieve more by doing less.
As far as being afraid of being disliked it is much more important to be respected. You will be more respected for bringing out the best in people than for pandering to those who do not want to commit to the group.
Above all have fun knowing that you are working your hardest for a successful group. I respect you for your question and commitment.

The first thing you must undersantd **don't try to do everything yourself** Delegate responsibilities to others and check up on them to make sure they are meeting their deadlines...just don't do that too often or you will be micromanaging. Good luck, I know it's difficult, but you really need a good staff underneath you for support, so it's not all up to you.
