the vet is a jerk and dumb, ive met him once and would NEVER bring my pets there, but he was cheap and still lives in the 1950's with his methods. Is the death the fault of the vet or not

She did not care about the price. Its not like she went around asking oh can I get a better deal. But she trusted the vet, and she believed her dog was in good hands.

Even an apparently healthy dog (or person) is at a small risk of death any time they are put under anesthesia. It is rare, but it does happen - even when everything is done properly. It may or may not have been the vet's fault. There should have been someone monitoring the dog during the operation to maintain the proper levels. Unless you can get someone on the vet's staff to admit there was negligence, there's nothing you can do. Sorry for your friends and the poor dog.

I worked for vets for years, and we never had a dog die from a simple spay or neuter, even the emergency pyometra ones. But, there are always some vets in every town that advertise that 'low cost' stuff that use antiquated machinery & old-fashioned anesthetics. Beware these kind of places! Many humane societies have or can reccomend a SAFE low cost spay/neuter clinic.
She can (& should) file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, the state's Attorney General's office, and the state's Veterinary Board. Good luck!

Why would anyone go to a vet that does not seem to have a clue????? Sometimes cheaper is not better and you get what you pay for!!!!!!!
It might be the fault of the vet, but animals do die from anesthesia, just like people. You may not know until they get anesthesia that they are too sensitive to it. I am sure pre-op blood work was not done first, so it would be very hard to prove fault. And usually they have a form that you sign saying that you realize that death is a possiable outcome.

They now have better meds to put a dog under, and if the vet used to much and killed the dog, then yes he is at fault. If the dog was healthy I would check into bringing up charges against the vet so that this doesn't happen to someone elses dog. Good luck, and sorry for your friends loss.

Yes, the death is the fault of the vet UNLESS there was an underlying issue that was unknown at the time of surgery. Dogs don't usually DIE during spaying. Essentially, it's a hysterectomy and is a very common procedure done successfully on dogs (and humans) every day.
Any time an animal is put under anesthesia, there is a chance they won't wake up - but that chance is very small. And unless there were other medical complications, this should have been a very safe surgery. Your friend should consult a lawyer.

KB is right on the money. Either it is the fault of the vet or there was an underlying medical cause that the dog passed away during a typical spaying operation. There's always that small chance that something might happen.

Everybody wants a bargain but a bargain can get very expensive. There are still Vets using out of date methods, it is not illegal. Your friend shouldn't have went for the 'bargain', especially for a surgery. Would he call around and go for the cheapest if he was having heart surgery?
ANYTIME your dog is put under it is a risk.
