Does anyone have a small breed dog that they got when their child was a toddler? What breed and what are your experiences with it? Most dogs will do fine with kids if they are raised from puppyhood with them. Just looking for some experiences. Thnks

My sister and I grew up with terriers. We had a Carin terrier as kids and then when I was in high school I got a terrier/ poodle mix as a gift. Both dogs were our babies and guardians all rolled up at the same time. Nowadays my sister has a mini-snauzer and (sis) is pregnant. The dog has a sweet nature and has dealt well with a variety of cats and a few kittens in her house so my sis is figuring that the dog will do great with the baby too. My husband and I have a Pekingese and a Jack Russell terrier and I wouldn't trust either one of them with a baby or small child. The Pekingese is sweet on his own but an attention hog and pretty territorial and the Jack is just crazy. He'd proably bounce on the kid and steal all the bottles or treats as the kid gets older.

I got a beagle puppy when my daughter was only eight months old. They have grown up together and he couldn't be more loveable or gentle with her. They're playful, social, and not intimidated by babies because they're not as small as a yip-yip lapdog (or pursedog as they're becoming now). Larger dogs are usually best with children but I wanted a smaller breed as well. Hope that helps!

Dogs of all sizes should be watch carefully around small children.. the animals can become frightened or injured by children who do not know thier own strength or that their actions can hurt the animal.. and an animal being what it is will protect itself ... so be mindful of your children..

I personally have a pair of small mixed breed mutts for the pound.. they have been great..

I recommend a beagle. That is what I grew up with. We have always had them. My dad loved that particular dog and had several. They are very loving dogs.
