I just started working out yesterday and today I bought a whey protein mix. Is it good to drink the protein then eat dinner? If I work out enough, in how much time will muscles start building up?

I probably wouldn't drink the whey protein right before dinner. The reason is that you are probably going to have sufficient protein in your dinner and anymore if just going to result in expensive urine.

Use the whey protein after you work out, when your body needs a jolt of protein and you don't have any normal food sources of protein. I sometimes use my whey protein as a snack in between meals when I want to bolster my protein quotient for the day.

Drinking extra protein will only result in your body eliminating it without using it. Generally, from all I've heard is that your body can only absorb about 50 grams of protein in a sitting (some people can absorb it better).

Good luck.

The biggest thing is not to get discouraged and give up and always remember that it may take a while to find the formula that works best for you. You may have to try different products to begin seeing the results you desire; on the other hand you may opt to limit supplementation and go it all natural. How ever you approach the situation, always remember patience is a virtue.

The optimal time take your protein is just after your workout. Though there are products specifically designed to take at bedtime or before and after workouts. Protein supplementation helps to restore your muscles with the nutrients that were depleted during strenuous activity.

I have included a link that you can visit that may be of interest in case you are looking to really bulk up, it mentions taking protein during your dinner meal in some detail... Good Luck!!!

You need about .75g of protein per lb of bodyweight. Up this a little bit on training days. Whey protein is best taken immediately after workout. If you workout in the evening and drink the protein at say 7:00, wait till 8:00 for your dinner. If you are trying to lose weight go light.
