They say hairs in several other languages, but in English it sounds kinda rude and rather painful

I don't know of any other language where they say "hairs". It's just the way it is, I think. Sounds a lot better this way. I mean, doesn't "hairs" there sound absurd, or forced?

I think when it is on your head you just say hair, but once it falls out it becomes plural. It just sounds better.

because the plural of hair is HAIR not hairs...
you can have STRANDS of hair but it is not correct to say I found three HAIRS on my pillow...
