It's like trying to juggle. It takes practice not to drop the balls.

When your mind starts entering into the meditative state, it has a tendency to slip into the most familiar state -- sleep. It takes practice to drop down into a deep trance, releasing awareness of the physical body and surroundings, without letting go of the direct cognitive perception of your own thoughts and senses.

In other words, as you go deeper into trance, there is a tendency for your mind to drop the ball, and let everything drift off. You need to practice maintaining the connection between conscious thought and internal perceptions, but still be able to let go of your physical awareness of your body and its surroundings. It takes practice.

Dreaming is the most common form of astral travel. That's actually what a dream is.

In any case, it sounds like you're trying this at night when you go to bed, so you shouldn't be surprised that you fall asleep. Try meditating during a part of the day when you're fully awake with sharp consciousness. Any mental activity will be more effective if your mind is clear and alert.

Personally, I acheived great success at sending my consciousness on travels, and many of the experiences were more vivid and "real" than daily waking. I came to the conclusion however that these were merely parlor tricks that distracted me from the real value of meditation, attaining stillness and listening to God.

Astro travel? You are kidding I hope. Never has been any reason to believe that such a thing is real. I think people do fall asleep, dream, and then somehow convince themselves it was somehow a real physical experience. Us humans are a naive and gullible lot.

The only out of body experience that is sanctioned by God will be at His need not yours. I don't know of anyone that can do it on command. You can send your mind anyplace yu want but it is probably imaging, or imagination. If you truly need to be in another place this moment pr in a time frame that is different then the natural. then god is the only one that can move the atoms around like that.
