All these answers are good, to add on, I have also seen patient's gain weight back despite having the surgery. The fact is, it is b/c of people's poor dietary and exercise habits that lead them to become overweight anyways. If you don't change the orginal problem, you will end up w/ the same results. The excess skin is another problem depending on how overweight the pt. is and it leads to a long history of plastic surgery. Some plastics won't even touch a pt. that has gone through this b/c of the complications w/ it. And like other people have been saying, alot of malabsorption issues seem to occur which obviously can be solved with........ta da...diet. Don't expect this to be a solution to your problems, but use it as one of many of your tools (along w/ diet, exercise, etc.) to make your life better. Good luck!

I checked it out a year or so ago and had it all set up but then changed my mind. I don't heal well after surgerys, right now I am still healing from a hermia repair august 2005. The one thing that scared me about the by pass if the after part I guess you would call it that. The huge chance of extra skin and I have seen some pretty bad examples of people having up to 60 pounds of just skin hanging there. I could not decide if I would just live with it there or have the surgery to rid of it and as I said I don't do well with surgerys I have had 14 of them to know. I have seen the whole body lift done and I am just not sure I want to go thru something like that. I guess I just got sared. Alot of people have told me if they would have known about the extra skin they might not have had the by pass. It is something everyone thinking about having it done needs to think about. I wish you ll the luck.

I have a couple of friends that have had the surgery and in the beginning it was really hard for them. They literally had to "re-learn" how to eat. Now, almost 5 years after one of them had it, she's dealing with actually gaining some of the weight back because her body has adjusted to what was done to it. You just have to know that the surgery isn't a quick fix. If you've watched Celebrity Fit Club and seen Carnie Wilson talk about how she STILL struggles with her weight after having the surgery maybe you'll see some of the long term effects that it can have on your body.

Well, any surgery is a risk....but my sister was thinking very seriously about it and she ended up deciding against it....first first you have to be on shakes for a month and you have to make sure you have a certain amount of protein everyday or else your hair can fall out, nails become very weak, can't drink through a straw because it produces gas, you can only eat very tiny portions or you vomit...this is a lifetime commitment....she felt this was just too much...and some deaths from complications....everyone is different though...for me I couldn't do it because I am just not disciplined enough....blessings....

I used to work the floor of the hospital that specialized in that surgery.
One thing that seemed to happen alot was people would come back and need to get their gall bladder removed.
We had one person died from it, but that was an Open not a Lapro.
I've heard and seen alot of success stories, but it takes alot of work and commitment.
also be wary of a panniceletomy (spelling) its the cosmetic surgery that removes the excessive skin after drastic weight loss - that's a tough recovery from what I've seen. The younger you are the better your skin is at "snapping" back.
GOOD LUCK.

Gastric Bypass Surgery /gastrectomy/stomach stapling /lapband (all types of bariatric surgery) is very safe nowadays. It is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.
I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as obesity surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your obesity surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
My cousin got her surgery for gastric bypass in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She has lost 65lbs in 5 months. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.hope this helps

I've had patients die from it.
You need to read up on all the risks of the surgery.
There are lots of people that have had problems with it.
Malabsorption and feeling ill afterwards, has been the greatest complaint here in the patient population, but I have seen patients either die from the surgery, or end up with a colostomy.
