I have Comcast basic cable. Do I have to buy a Comcast HD box? Or is there a generic box I can buy?

You will need a cable box or the card to get HD from Comcast. Comcast will charge you extra for the tier on which the HD channels are. However, you can receive free over-the-air HD from your local TV stations with just an antenna. If your new TV has an antenna, connect it and use the TV's automatic tuning routine to find the channels. If your TV did not come with an antenna, buy a set of rabbit ears at Radio Shack and try them out.

I watch free over-the-air HDTV all the time and it looks great.

I have time warner cable. I just got a HD cable box through the cable company. I pay $8.00 more a month for the box. I also pay $6.00 extra for more HD channels. With time warner formally adelphia cable I get quite a few HD channels.

you will need an hd cable or satellite reciever and also need to subscribe to the hd programming... remember that the atsc (digital tuner) in your tv is only capable of recieving anything that is being broadcast free in high defenition (which is very little right now)
