Sweet Rory....... I almost have a hard time believing some of these antics, but they are funny just the same so here it goes. A dog should walk right next to you. You need to teach him to heel without distractions and once he has mastered that then work on having him heel when there are distractions (such as a BBQ a woman whatever).
If you really don't have the time to teach him to heel, then you could buy a gentle leader. hey sell for like $20 and can find them at any pet store, they go around the snout and neck, but do not stop the dog from barking or stop him from being able to pant. It works by when the dog goes to pull it turns his head back to you and he can't pull anymore, it won't hurt him. Good Luck

Get one of those Gentle Leader halters, it goes around their head and when you are pulling their head towards you, they cannot keep going in a different direction. I would also recommend getting a very short leash for a while and making him walk only right beside you. It will get him used to staying close - if he keeps pulling, turn around and take him back home. If he really wants to go for walks, he will soon learn he has to do it YOUR WAY!!
Also, for exercise you should try taking him to the dog park once in a while. He has to not be agressive towards other people or dogs but it is totally fenced in and safe place for him to run and use up some of that excess energy.
My dog is a doberman/boxer mix who weighs about 110 so he's not quite as large as a great dane but he is very strong and these things helped the same problem with him. Good Luck!!

If he is not neutered that could be the reason for sniffing the women's crotches. The horomones are something he can smell, even though we can't. Also, for the pulling they have a product called a gentle leader. It's basically a harness that goes on their noses. When they pull too hard or go too far, their head gets pulled to the side so they have to stop pulling and re-position themselves. They also have choke collars, which work well. They get tighter as he pulls harder. There is also a product called a prong-lead. It has little prongs that stick into his neck. When he pulls too hard they poke into him and the pressure usually causes him to stop. Unfortunately these should only be used for people who won't suddenly yank on his leash. The sudden yanking can cause the prongs to break the skin and/or cause damage to the neck and trachea. Hope this helps you alittle.

there's a number of things you should do. first, it's obvious who's the alpha dog, and it's not you. first things first. if he's even a possible biter, muzzle him, and take him to the floor. just grab all four legs and pull them out from under him and get on top of him. hold him down, (this isn't fun, nor is it funny), belly up to you until he relaxes and looks away. this is the only way to get him to submit to YOU. once you have reestablished your dominance, take him out on leash with a choke collar. most people don't know how to use one properly, so they buy the one with the prongs in it. the proper way to use a choke is to place it as high as possible on the dog's neck. right behind his ears, directly behind his jaw. this way, your pulling the dog's head, not trying to pull his whole body. if this doesn't work after a bit, try an electronic collar with a remote. when he pulls, give him a little zap. nothing harsh, just enough to get his attention. they have variable forces on them. and just keep working on the submission with him. he needs to submit to you. also, don't allow him to stop every two seconds. you decide where to go and how fast, etc. good luck. try it. you'll be surprised.

Having a trained dog isn’t the same as having a balanced dog, but if your dog knows a few basic commands, it can be helpful when tackling problem behaviors — existing ones or those that may develop in the future. Learn here https://tr.im/dupnI
So where do you start with dog obedience training? You could take a class, but it’s not necessary; you can do it yourself. In fact, with the right attitude, it can be fun for both you and your dog!
Step 1 : Sit
This is one of the easiest dog obedience commands to teach, so it’s a good one to start with.
• Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose.
• Move your hand up, allowing his head to follow the treat and causing his bottom to lower.
• Once he’s in sitting position, say “Sit,” give him the treat, and share affection.
Repeat this sequence a few times every day until your dog has it mastered. Then ask your dog to sit before mealtime, when leaving for walks, and during other situations where you’d like him calm and seated.
Step 2 : Come
This command can help keep a dog out of trouble, bringing him back to you if you lose grip on the leash or accidentally leave the front door open.
• Put a leash and collar on your dog.
• Go down to his level and say, “Come,” while gently pulling on the leash.
• When he gets to you, reward him with affection and a treat.
Once he’s mastered it with the leash, remove it — and practice the command in a safe, enclosed area.
Step 3 : Down
This can be one of the more difficult commands in dog obedience training. Why? Because the position is a submissive posture. You can help by keeping training positive and relaxed, particularly with fearful or anxious dogs.
• Find a particularly good smelling treat, and hold it in your closed fist.
• Hold your hand up to your dog’s snout. When he sniffs it, move your hand to the floor, so he follows.
• Then slide your hand along the ground in front of him to encourage his body to follow his head.
• Once he’s in the down position, say “Down,” give him the treat, and share affection.
Repeat it every day. If your dog tries to sit up or lunges toward your hand, say “No” and take your hand away. Don’t push him into a down position, and encourage every step your dog takes toward the right position. After all, he’s working hard to figure it out!

Watch the dog whisperer. Or look him up online. He is a dog behavior rehabilitator. He sells books too. All your dog needs is training and for him to see you as the pack leader. Seriously follow Cesar Milan's techniques and all will be well.

Learning how to train your dog will improve your life and hers, enhance the bond between you, and ensure her safety and it can be a lot of fun. Dogs are usually eager to learn, and the key to success is good communication. Your dog needs to understand how you’d like her to behave and why it’s in her best interest to comply with your wishes.
