I think you would have to have the same amount of black and white and colour pictures for you to be able to truly mix them. But alternatively, you could have blocks of black and white and blocks of colour photos, that would work really well because the eye is drawn to each block in turn and enables you to see every picture.

I made a collage of my preschool students' pictures on the wall and because I didn't always have access to a color printer, some of them were just black and white. I thought it looked pretty cool. I also think the difference in the picture draws the eye to the different elements in the collage.

NO, do a grouping with the black and whites, and then a color grouping on a different wall if you have to have them in the same room. It would be too confusing to the eye.
Better yet, why don't you take in your color family pics and have them copied to black and white.

The great thing about collages is that you can use anything you want to: pictures, magazine pieces, paint, it's like a giant scrapbook. I suggest you lay out everything before you start gluing or taping this way you can change your mind as many times as you want until it's just right.

Probably. I think the frames (sizes and shapes) and the configuration of them is the most important part. I do think, though, that sticking to all black and white or all color might look best. Practice your layout on the floor before hanging anything.

Hurray Nicole! You are absolutely correct. This is art ... your art. Do not be constrained by types and conventions. make it look good to you and it will be right. I have seen, and made, installations and hangings using a mix of Black and White and Color with very pleasing results.

I wouldn't do it - I would do two different collages - one with B/W and the other with color photos.

definitely. The more diversity, the better. I'd do mostly color, with a few b+w spread out, and maybe a few sepia as well.
