Just eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink skim milk, for meat limit yourself to fish and fowl, don't bother with seconds (one serving is plenty), avoid unhealthy snacks like chips, cookies, cake, ice cream, etc etc, and don't drink more than one alcoholic drink a day...
And be more active; walking, biking, treadmill, anything that gets you moving....
Will work better than any 'named' diet....

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.
On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.
The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!
Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.
Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.
Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

If you like the idea of Atkins, but want to take better care of yourself, you should consider South Beach. It is very similar, in that it is largely protein based. However, South Beach focuses on lean proteins and also urges you to be aware of your calorie consumption as well. Since you won't have time to buy and read a book before you go shopping, let me offer some suggestions:
Breakfast: 1-2 eggs, 2 slices of turkey bacon or canadian bacon
Lunch: Salad greens, lean protein, light cheeses, SB dressing.
Dinner: Lean protein (chick. breast, lean beef, etc), broccoli or grean beans
Snacks: 15 almonds, celery w/ natural peanut butter
I would still recommend you buy the book, or see if it is available at your local library. Copy the list of all the acceptable foods and highlight everything you like on that list. Next time you shop, take that with you. If all you have are South Beach approved foods, you cannot cheat... Also, most Kraft or subsidary products have the South Beach seal on them, like the cheeses, Planters nut mixes, and veggie burgers. Good luck... The first few weeks will be rough, but once your body cleans out all the sugars, you won't crave them so bad anymore.

To lose weight, a person has to reduce the calorie intake by some amount by modifying their diet. A diet without sufficient nutrients will only increase the appetite of the person trying to lose weight. Since most people combine a diet with an exercise plan, additional nutrients are required for the growth of muscles required to increase the metabolic rate required for long term weight loss. The food pyramid is the best one to use. It includes not just food, but lifestyle changes including more exercise, less fat, sugar and meat. It also stresses the importance of taking care of your self.
In my religion, we have something called the word of wisdom, which helps us to know what to eat and how to treat our bodies.. I'll post a link at the end. It really is a good one to follow, even if you aren't my religion. I've followed it myself and lost weight, felt better, had more energy and was able to do more in my day then before.
Although it talks about not drinking caffine, some of us still do, and there are no real problems, but others, like me, have problems with caffine, so it's easier to stay away from it.

If you want to know what foods to buy-
buy more of them from the edges of the store, and fewer from the middle.
More produce, healthy meats/fish, dairy
less processed and packaged stuff from the middle.
No "Diet" is worth really going on. Most leave you worse off than when you started. Begin to change the way you eat and exercise for the rest of your life.

I'd have to agree with soccor star on this one. No one really wants to hear this, they think there must be some type of secret to dieting, but there really isn't. Whether you want to temporarily or permanently loose weight,---------EXCERSIZE AND EAT ONLY FOODS THAT COME OUT OF THE GROUND.
Fruits and veggies---PLAIN fruits and veggies
Excersize every morning-----Incline TREDMILS
RUN YOUR BUTT OFF AND EAT ONLY FRUITS AND VEGGIES
That's all you have to do!!!!!
And trust me the wieght will fall off.
