For 'Christians' to kill is not living up to the teachings of Christ. Nowhere in his teachings does he say it's OK for his followers to kill. Instead, he taught his followers to be peaceful. For example, when Peter tried to defend Jesus (I can think of no more powerful reason for drawing the sword), Jesus told him to put away his sword. He taught us to pray for our enemies, and to follow his example of love.
So when you read about the crusades and all the other cases of 'Christians' killing others - even others who claim to be Christian, can they really be said to 'true' Christians?

What does this have to do with religion & spirituality or being christian or not?

I am not American so I don't know the exact legal definitions for murder 1st, 2nd etc degree.
As far as I can understand (since English is not my mother language) it has to do with the intesions. Killing is just taking the life of somebody, while murder suggests that there is an ulterior motive. E.g. imagine you are a doctor and you infuse intravenously a drug to a patient. If by mistake you gave the wrong drug and the patient died then you killed him. If you gave the drug on purpose intending to kill him then you you committed murder.
