I want to teach myself either Italian or Hebrew. I want to learn Italian because I myself am Italian. I'd also like to learn Hebrew because I think it is an interesting language and it sounds beautiful to me. How easy is Italian to learn? What about Hebrew? Which one is easier to learn? Thanks so much!

hi!
I'm Italian, I think is would be easy, grammar is similar to Spanish or French. Some words are quite similar and easy to understand 'cause English use many words from Latin or ancient Greek... if you know Spanish or French will be even easier learn Italian, if not, learning Italian you'll be able to understand also a bit of French or Spanish..
if you need something ask me !

I don't speak Italian, but I believe that it would be much easier for you to learn Italian if you already speak English (both languages are Indo-European). Hebrew is a Semitic language and it's totally different than the Indo European languages.

And yet, I would recommend on learning Hebrew. I may not be the most objective one (as it is my mother tongue), but I think that Hebrew is a very lively and beautiful language. There are loads of great websites and books that you can learn by, but the best way would be learning it in a university, college, or even to spend some time in Israel.
Good luck!

Any language is difficult to master. Of Italian and Hebrew,
I think Italian is easier because it has a simpler
grammar and syntax. The Hebrew verb system
is quite complicated and there are many
irregular verbs.
Just my opinion!

I cannot answer as to Hebrew but, as an adult, I learned Italian as a second language in about a year. Upper advanced level in a year with only the internet for use in pronunciation. There is a group where you can work "in tandem" meaning you as an english speaker is paired with a person who is a native speaker of the language you want to learn but also wants to learn english.

It takes time but it's great. Use webcam and microphone to practice. Use IM to send a phrase and let the other person try to speak it. Make corrections with them. It's a good deal and it's free.

My husband and I have learned Spanish and Russian.
If you would like to explore other methods of learning I would also suggest these products that have helped us. We use BOTH the Rosetta Stone (a computer program) and the Pimsleur Method (audio cd's). These two are the best things on the market.

Each approaches learning the language a different way. And I have found using both really helps round out my learning.

The Pimsleur method is super fast and the best to start with. You are given 30 minute lessons you listen and speak with. You start with basic and keep adding until you are able to have a full conversion.

Rosetta Stone will help with reading and the grammer. I found this to help complete what I was learning with Pimsleur.

If you have to choose only one.. go with Pimsleur. You will be able to have conversations very quickly.

Italian will be easier to learn and a lot more useful but Hebrew is a beautiful language and if you take it seriously you could master it. I am a native Hebrew speaker, you are welcome to write to me if you decide to learn Hebrew for any question you have
Good luck.
